Mathematics Investigation Grade 11 Capricorn South/Term 1 2020

INVESTIGATION # 1:

1.1 State the exponent rules and clearly explain how each rule works.

▪ When the same bases are multiplied, the exponents are added → 𝑎𝑚 × 𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎𝑚+𝑛
▪ When the same bases are divided, the exponents are subtracted → 𝑎𝑚 ÷ 𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎𝑚−𝑛
▪ When a power is raised to an exponent, the exponents are multiplied → (𝑎𝑚 )n = 𝑎𝑚×𝑛
𝑛
𝑚
▪ When a power is under a root sign, the exponent is divided by the root → √𝑎𝑛 = 𝑎𝑚
▪ Anything to the power of zero is one → 𝑎0 = 1
▪ When a power has a negative exponent, the power is inverted (placed under 1) and the
1
exponent becomes positive → 𝑎−𝑛 = 𝑎𝑛

1.2 In the following equations, solve for x (to two decimal places where necessary) and
write all the steps until the final answer.
𝟕
𝑎. 𝟓𝟑𝒙 − 𝟓𝟑𝒙−𝟏 = 𝟒 b. 𝟑𝒙+𝟏 ∙ 𝟓 − 𝟒 ∙ 𝟑𝒙+𝟐 = − 𝟑
7
∴ 53𝑥 (1 − 5−1 ) = 4 ∴ 3𝑥 (3.5 − 4. 32 ) = − 3
4 7
∴ 53𝑥 ( ) = 4 ∴ 3𝑥 (−21) = −
5 3
1
∴ 53𝑥 = 5 ∴ 3𝑥 = 9

∴ 3x = 1 ∴ 3𝑥 = 3−2
1
∴x=3 ∴ 𝑥 = −2
𝟐𝟒𝟐
c. 𝟑𝟐−𝒙 − 𝟑−𝒙−𝟑 = d. 𝟓𝟐𝒙+𝟒 − 𝟐𝟓𝒙−𝟏 = 𝟕𝟖 𝟏𝟐𝟎
𝟗
242
∴ 3−𝑥 (32 − 3−3 ) = ∴ 52𝑥+4 − 25𝑥−1 = 78120
9
242 242
∴ 3−𝑥 ( 27 ) = ∴ 52𝑥+4 − 52𝑥−2 = 78120
9

∴ 3−𝑥 = 3 ∴ 52𝑥 (54 − 5−2 ) = 78120

15624
∴ −𝑥 = 1 ∴ 52𝑥 ( ) = 78120
25

∴ 52𝑥 = 125
3
∴ 52𝑥 = 53 ∴𝑥=2

INVESTIGATION # 2

2.1 State the rules for surds.

▪ You may only add or subtract like terms e.g. 3√𝑎 + 4√𝑎 = 7√𝑎
▪ √𝑎 × √𝑏 = √𝑎𝑏 or vice versa
√𝑎 𝑎
▪ = √𝑏 or vice versa
√𝑏

2.2 When we simplify surds, we often leave a square-root or cube-root in the

denominator. However, the calculator rationalizes the answer so that there is no surd in
the denominator. With that said, rationalise and also solve for x in the following:
3 3
a.
1−√2
b. √4 + 𝑥 = 3
3 1+√2 3
= × ∴ ( √4 + 𝑥 )3= (3)3
1−√2 1+√2
3+3√2
= ∴ 4 + 𝑥 = 27
1−2

= −3 − 3√2 ∴ 𝑥 = 23
3
Check: √4 + 23 = 3

c. √3𝑥 2 − √12 = 0 d. √18 − 𝑥√2 = √32

∴ (√3𝑥 2 )2 = (√12)2 ∴ −𝑥√2 = √32 − √18
∴ 3𝑥 2 = 12 ∴ −𝑥√2 = 4√2 −3√2
∴ 𝑥2 = 4 ∴ −𝑥√2 = √2
∴ 𝑥 = ±2 ∴ −𝑥 = 1
Check: √3(2)2 = √12 ∴ 𝑥 = −1

Check: √3(−2)2 = √12

INVESTIGATION # 3

−2 ±√2𝑚+5
3.1 The solutions of a quadratic equation are given by x = . For which value(s)
7
of m will this equation have?
a) Two equal solutions?

2m + 5 = 0
−5
∴𝑚=
2
b) No real solutions

2m + 5< 0
−5
∴𝑚<
2
3.2 Show that K lies between -8 and 1 in the following inequality.

k2 + 7k ≤ 8
∴ k2 + 7k – 8 ≤ 0
∴ (𝑘 + 8)(𝑘 − 1) ≤ 0
−8 ≤ 𝑘 ≤ 1
