“Little Albert – An ethical dilemma”

The Little Albert Experiment is one of the most well-known and controversial
psychological experiments of the 20th century. In 1920, American psychologist
John B. Watson and his graduate student, Rosalie Rayner, carried out a study.
The goal was to see if fear can be taught to a child. For their experiment,
Watson and Rayner selected a 9-month-old infant named "Albert" and exposed
him to a series of stimuli, including a white rat, a rabbit, a dog, and various
masks. Initially, Albert showed no fear of any of these objects. The
experimenters recorded this response. In the second phase, a loud noise was
made close to his ears whenever a rat was presented. Albert began to cry and
show signs of fear. After several repetitions of this procedure, Albert began to
show a fear response to the rat alone, even when the loud noise was not
present. He then began to be afraid of any furry animal.

25 Why was the experiment conducted? What was the result? 2

26 Do you think this experiment takes care of ethics? State which ethical concerns 2
are followed or not followed in the above experiment.
