HOW TO USE THIS COMPETENCY-BASED LEARNING

MATERIAL
Welcome to the module Service and Maintain Window-Type Air-
Conditioning/ Domestic Refrigeration Units. This module contains
training materials and activities for you to complete.

The unit of competency "Servicing and Maintaining Window-Type

Air-Conditioning/ Domestic Refrigeration Units" contains knowledge,
skills and attitudes required for RAC Servicing. It is one of the core
modules leading to National Certificate level II (NC II).

You are required to go through a series of learning activities to

complete each learning outcome of the module. In each learning outcome
are Information Sheets and Instruction Sheets (Reference Materials
for further reading to help you better understand the required activities).
Follow these activities on your own and answer the self-check at the end
of each learning outcome. You may remove a blank answer sheet at the
end of each module (or get one from your facilitator/trainer) to write your
answers for each self-check. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask
your facilitator/trainer for assistance.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may already have some or most of the knowledge and skills
covered in this learner's guide because you have:
 been working for some time
 already completed training in this area.

If you can demonstrate to your trainer that you are competent in a

particular skill or skills, talk to him/her about having them formally
recognized so you don't have to do the same training again. If you have a
qualification or Certificate of Competency from previous trainings, show it
to your trainer. If the skills you acquired are still current and relevant to
the units of competencies, they may become part of the evidence you can
present for RPL. If you are not sure about the currency of your skills,
discuss this with your trainer.

At the end of this module is a Learner’s Diary. Use this diary to

record important dates, jobs undertaken and other workplace events that
will assist you in providing further details to your trainer or assessor. A
Record of Achievement is also provided for your trainer to complete
once you complete the module.

This module was prepared to help you achieve the required

competencies on Servicing and Maintaining Window-Type Air-
Conditioning/Domestic Refrigeration Units. This will be the source of
information for you to acquire knowledge and skills in this particular trade
independently and at your own pace, with minimum supervision or help
from your instructor.

 Talk to your trainer and agree on how you will both organize the
Training for this unit. Read the module carefully. It is divided into
sections, which cover all the skills and knowledge you need to
successfully complete this module.

 Work through all the information and complete the activities in each
section. Read the information sheets and complete the self-check.
Suggested references are included to supplement the materials
provided in this module.
 Most probably, your trainer will also be your supervisor or manager.
He/she is there to support you and show you the correct way to do
things.
 Your trainer will tell you about the important things you need to
consider when you are completing activities. It is important that you
listen and take notes.

 You will be given plenty of opportunity to ask questions and practice

on-the-job. Make sure you practice your new skills during regular
work shifts. This way, you will improve both your speed and memory
and also your confidence.

 Talk to more experienced workmates and ask for their guidance.

 Use the self-check questions at the end of each section to test your
own progress.

 When you are ready, ask your trainer to watch you perform the
activities outlined in this module.

 As you work through the activities, ask for written feedback about
your progress. Your trainer keeps feedback/ pre-assessment reports
for this reason. When you have successfully completed each
element, ask your trainer to mark on the reports that you are ready
for assessment.

 When you have completed this module (or several modules), and
feel confident that you have had sufficient practice, your trainer will
arrange an appointment with registered assessor to assess you. The
results of your assessment will be recorded in your competency
Achievement Record

BASIC ELECTRICITY WIRING CONNECTION:

There are four types of wiring electrical connection namely:

 Series wiring electrical connection

 Parallel wiring electrical connection
 Series – parallel electrical wiring connection
 Parallel – series electrical wiring connection

In series wiring connection;

B E B E
L1 L2

You have to consider the following:

 End terminal and beginning terminal are joint together

 If two loads wires connected to each other, it is considered as series
wiring connection
 If two other ends terminal connected to the power supply, it is a
series complete wiring connection
B E B E

P.S

In parallel wiring connection:

B E B E
L1 L2

P.S

You have to consider the following:

 Beginning to beginning terminal are joint together and End to end

terminal are joint together
 If three wires or more connected to each other, it is considered as
parallel wiring connection
 If two other ends terminal connected to the power supply, it is a
parallel complete wiring connection.

In Series – Parallel wiring connections:

It is a combination of two circuits. You have to consider the following
conditions:

 Establish the two circuits combination, one is the series circuit and
the parallel wiring connection
 Two circuits first, connect to the series circuit and then parallel
 If two other ends terminal connected to the power supply, it is a
series parallel complete wiring connection.

In Parallel – series wiring connections:

It is a combination of two circuits. You have to consider the following
conditions:

 Establish the two circuits combination, one is the series circuit and
the parallel wiring connection
 Two circuits first, connect to the parallel and then to series
 If two other ends terminal connected to the power supply, it is a
parallel – series complete wiring connections.

TYPES OF ELECTRICAL DIAGRAM:

 SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM

 It used when designing or troubleshooting an installation

 PICTORIAL DIAGRAM OR WIRING DIAGRAM

 A diagram shows the physical location of all components.

SCHEMATIC DIAGRAM
Two lamps connected in parallel controlled by a single switch individually.

Let us interpret the schematic diagram, we have to consider the following

conditions:

1. How many components at the schematic diagram?

2. What are the components at the schematic diagram?
3. How the components connected to the source?
4. Identify the numbers of wire connected to the source?

The analysis of the diagram:

 The black line in the schematic diagram is represented a

TERMINATING JOINT on the wire connections.
 The vertical line is the wire connected to the components
 To read the schematic diagram is from left to right and top to
bottom.
 To check actual the actual wiring is to count the number of
vertical wires.
 Since all beginning wire are joint together, so they are
connected in parallel with the power source.
 Two lamps connected in parallel controlled by a single switch
individually.
PICTORIAL DIAGRAM OR ACTUAL WIRING DIAGRAM:

HOW THE CURRENT FLOWS IN THE CIRCUITS?

You have to consider the following conditions:

 In series circuit the current flows straight path in the wire. There is
no division of the current path in the circuit.
 In parallel circuit, the current flows separately at the junctions and it
will be met again at the end of the other junctions. The analogy of
this is the rotunda in driving the car.

SELF – CHECK 2.2-2

Answer the following questions.

1. How many components in the circuits?

2. How they are connected in the circuits?
3. How they are connected to the power supply?
4. Describe the connection of the loads in the circuits.
5. Draw the actual wiring diagram of the given schematic diagram.
