INSTRUCTIONS
1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C
2. Answer all questions in each section
3. Write your examination number at the top right corner of every page
4. Show your work clearly
5. All diagrams should be drawn in pencil
6. Where necessary the following constants may be used:
i. Acceleration due to gravity (g) = 10m/s2
ii. Density of water = 1g/cm3
FOR EXAMINERS' USE ONLY
1. For each of the items (i)-(ii), choose the correct answer from the given alternatives
and write its letters in the box provided
(i) What is the usefulness of laboratory rules when carrying out experiments in
the physics laboratory
A. Making students enjoy science
B. Helping students conduct experiment freely
C. Ensuring safety in the laboratory
D. Enhancing communication with other technicians
(ii) Which of the following is a set of effect of forces exerted when you are riding
a bicycle?
A. Compressional, viscosity and stretching
B. Torsional, attraction and couple
C. Frictional, couple and pulling
D. Attraction, friction and restoring
(iii) A hydrometer is an instrument for measuring the density or relative density of
a liquid. What are you supposed to do in order to increase its sensitivity?
A. Increasing the size of the bulb
B. Making the stem narrower
C. Reducing the lead shots in the weighted bulb
D. Increasing the length of the stem
(iv) Which method is preferred to use if a student wishes to charge a charged
body using a positively charged body in order to make it acquire positive
charge?
A. Friction
B. Contact
C. Induction
D. Heating
(v) Why are magnets often fitted to the doors of refrigerators and some of the
cupboards
A. To keep away heat
B. To keep the inside environment warm
C. To keep the door tightly closed
D. To keep iron away
(vi) An object immersed in a liquid in a tank experiences an up thrust. What is
the physical phenomenon that causes the up thrust?
A. The density of the body differs from that of the liquid
B. The density of the liquid increases with depth
C. Pressure in the liquid increases with depth
D. The value of g in the liquid increases with depth
(vii) The same body immersed in liquid A and then in the liquid B. The extent to
which the body sinks in the liquid B is less than in liquid A. What conclusion
can be delivered from such an observation?
The density of liquid A is more than the density of the liquid B
The density of liquid B is more than that of liquid A
The density of the solid body is less than that of that of the liquid in both cases
The density of liquid A is the same as that of liquid B
(viii) How can you make a rough measure of the size of the molecule?
A. By measuring the height to which water rises in narrow capillary tube
B. By measuring the speed with which Brownian vapour spreads in air
C. By observing Brownian motion of small particles
D. By measuring the area of the cycle in which a small drop spreads in water
(ix) Which of the following is a set of natural sources of light?
(I) Sun, Star and Fluorescence
