FERGUSSON COLLEGE (Autonomous) Pune-4

S.Y.B.Sc (Minor)
Subject: Physics
Paper Title: Oscillations and Optics
Paper Code: PHY 211
Assignment
Instruction to students:
1. Write your name, roll no. , major subject on the first page of the assignment.
2. All questions are compulsory.
3. Assignment should be submitted by 22 nd November 2024 by 1:00 pm in S.Y.B.Sc
Physics Laboratory. No assignment will be accepted after 1:00 pm.

Answer the following questions:

1. Define linear simple harmonic motion. Write the equation for linear simple harmonic
motion, also create the relation for velocity in terms of displacement and amplitude.

2. A simple harmonic oscillator of mass 50 gm oscillates along a path length of 0.2 m at

a frequency of 10 Hz. What is its energy?
3. A particle is subjected to two rectangular directions such that the displacement at any
π
instant is given by x= 2 sin (ωt+ ) and y= 2 sin ωt. Find the nature and equation of
4
the path.

4. Write the equation of motion for damped oscillation and discuss the three cases.

5. Define logarithmic decrement and write its relation.

6. A particle performing S.H.M. has velocities 8 cm/sec and 10 cm/sec when it is at
distance 5 cm and 4 cm respectively from the mean position. What is its amplitude?
d2 x dx
7. The equation for critically damped motion is given by 3( ) +R ( )+48x=0.
dt 2 dt
Determine the value of R.
8. A fixed source emits sound of frequency 1000 Hz. Calculate the frequency as heard
by the observer (i) at rest (ii) moving towards the source at constant speed of 20 m/s
and (iii) moving away from the source at the same rate.
9. A train with the whistle, approaches a station at a speed of 30m/s. The frequency of
the whistling sound from the engine is 900 Hz. Determine the apparent change in the
frequency of sound as heard by the listener standing on the platform of the station.
Assume air is at rest and speed of sound is 330 m/s.
10. Explain the working of Barton’s pendulum.
11. The amplitude of an oscillatory system reduces from 3.981 cm to 1 cm. If the
logarithmic decrement is 0.02303, calculate the number of oscillations during that
time period.
12. Illustrate that Doppler effect in sound is asymmetric.
