General Instruction:
1. All questions are compulsory. There are 33 questions in all.
2. This question paper has five sections: A, B, C, D and E.
3. Section A contains 16 questions, 12 MCQs and 4 Assertion–Reasoning based questions of 1
mark each.
Section B contains 5 questions of 2 marks each.
Section C contains 7 questions of 3 marks each.
SectionD contains 2 case study based questions of 4 marks each.
Section E contains 3 long answer type questions of 5 marks each.
4. There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in one question in
Section B, two questions in Section C, and all three questions in Section E. You have to
attempt only one of the choices in such questions.

17. Even though an electric field E exerts a force qE on a charged particle yet the electric field of
EM wave does not contribute to the radiation pressure. Explain.
18. (a) Is Huygens’s principle valid for longitudinal waves?
(b) In YDS experiment if one of the slit is closed,how the fringe pattern will change? Will be
still get interference?
OR
(a) Why diffraction of sound wave is more evident in daily experience than that of light wave?
(b) What is intensity of light where path difference in YDS is λ/4.
19. What is name given to the curves, the tangent to which at any point gives the direction of the
magnetic field at that point? Can two such curves intersect? Justify your answer.
20. Prove that the motional emf produced due to rotational motion of a rod is½ Bwl 2.
21. (a)Draw a ray diagram when an object is placed between the focus and pole of convex lens.
(b) What will be magnification if focal length of lens is 5 cm in this situation?

Section C
22. Two long straight parallel conductors carry current I 1 and I2 separated by a distance d. If the
current is flowing in same direction, show how the magnetic field set up in one produces an
attractive force on other. Obtain expression for this force. Hence define one ampere.
OR
(a) State Biot- Savart law and express this law in the vector form.
(b) Two identical circular coils P and Q each of radius R, carrying current 1A and √3 A
respectively are placed concentrically and perpendicular to each other lying in the XY
plane and YZ plane. Find the magnitude and direction of the net magnetic field at the
centre of the coils.
23. (a) A cell of emf E and internal resistance r is connected across a variable load resistance
R.Draw the plots of the terminal voltage V versus (i) R and (ii) Current I.
(b) It is found when R= 4Ω the current is 1 A and when R is increased to 9Ω, the current
reduces to 0.5 A . Find the value of the EMF and internal resistance.
24. (a) Derive an expression for the frequency of radiation emitted when a hydrogen atom de-
excites from level n to level (n-1). Also show that for large value of n, this frequency
equals to classic frequency of revolution of an electron.
(b) An electron in the hydrogen atom makes transition from n=2 energy to the ground state.
Find the frequency and wavelength so emitted.
25. (a)Explain the term "depletion layer and potential barrier" in a PN junction diode. How are the
width of(i) depletion layer and (ii) value of barrier potential affected when PN junction is
forward biased.
(b) Draw a graph between resistance and temperature for semiconductor.
26. (a) A platinum surface having work function 5.63 eV is illuminated by a monochromatic
source of 1.6 x 1015 Hz. What will be minimum wavelength associated with the ejected
electron?
(b) The wavelength λ of a photon and the de Broglie wavelength of an electron of mass m
have the same value. Show that the energy of the photon is 2λmc/h times the kinetic
energy of the electron, where c and h have their usual meanings.

27. The total energy of an electron in the first excited state of the hydrogen atom is about -3.4eV
(a) What is KE of the electron in this state?
(b) What is potential energy of electron in this state?
(c) Which of the above answer would change if the choice of the zero of potential energy is
changed?
28. (a) Draw the energy band diagram for P type semiconductor at (i) T=0K (ii) at room
temperature.
(b) Write any two distinguishing features between conductor, semiconductors andinsulators
on basis of energy band diagram.

(a) Draw V-I characteristics of a PN junction diode then explain why is the current under
reverse bias almost independent of the applied potential up to critical voltage? Why does
the reverse current show a sudden increase at the critical voltage?
(b) Explain how depletion region of diode is affected when it is (a)forward biased(b) reverse
biased.

29. Experimental study of photoelectric effect:

To study photoelectric effect, Lenard observed that when ultraviolet light allowed to fall on
photosensitive plate through quartz window then electrons emitted form it and will travel
towards positive terminal anode, so a current called photoelectric current will flows in outer

Section E
31. (i) Explain briefly with the help of a labeled diagram, the basic principle of the working of an
AC generator. In an AC generator coil of N turns and area A is rotated at an angular
velocity ω in a uniform magnetic field. Derive expression for the instantaneous value of the
emf induced in a coil. What is source of energy generation in this device?
OR
(ii) With the help of a diagram, explain the principle of a device which changes a low AC
voltage into a high voltage. Deduce the expression for the ratio of the number of turns of
primary voltage to the secondary in terms of the ratio of the number of primary to
secondary winding. For an ideal transformer, obtain the ratio of primary to secondary
currents in terms of the ratio of the voltages in the secondary to primary.
(iv) Write any two sources of the energy losses which occur in actual transformer.

(v) A step up transformer converts a low input voltage into a high output voltage .Does it
violate law of conservation of energy?
32. (a) Draw a ray diagram for the formation of image of a point object by a thin double convex
lens having radii of curvature R1 and R2 . Hence derive lens makers formula.
(b) A converging lens has a focal length of 10 cm in air. It is made of refractive index 1.6. If it
is immersed in a liquid of refractive index 1.3 find its new focal length.
OR
(a) Define a wavefront. How it is different from a ray?
(b) Using Huygen’s construction of secondary wavelets draw a diagram showing the passage
of a plane wavefront from a denser to a rarer medium. Using it verify Snell’s law.
Two waves have intensities in the ratio of 25:9. Calculate ratio of minimum to maximum
intensity.
33. (a) Deduce the expression for the torque acting on a dipole of dipole moment pin the
presence of a uniform electric field.
(b) Two charges q1 and q2 are placed at (0,0,d) and (0,0,–d) respectively. Find locus of point
where potential is zero.
(c) A cube of side 20 cm is kept in a region as shown in the figure. An electric field E exists in
the region such that the potential at a point is given by V= 10x+5 where V is in volt and x
is in m. Find the total flux through the cube.

OR
(a) Define ideal dipole.
(b) Find expression for electric field due to dipole on equatorial line of dipole.
(c) What charge would be required to electrify a sphere of radius 25 cm so as to get a surface
charge density of 3/л?
