FARM STRUCTURE AND FARM BUILDING
Farm structures: are simple temporary construction or facilities in the farm used for various simple
farming operations.
Farm structures and buildings are constructed for successful farm operations and for proper
functioning of the farm. It also make farm activities easier and faster.
Farm structures can be classified into the following:
1. PRODUCTION STRUCTURES: These are structures or facilities used in tending crops and rearing
animals. These structures are created for activities such as pollination, brooding, breeding and milking
e t c. production structures include fish pond, battery cage, paddocks, rabbit hutches, nurseries e t c.
2. FARM PROCESSING STRUCTURES: These are structures that house processing facilities such as
feed mills, rice mills, drying sheds, silage pit and slaughter slab e t c
3. STORAGE STRUCTURES: These are structures used to store harvested crops and serve as drying
equipment. Agricultural produce are stored in various facilities in the farm such as yam barn, silos,
rhombus, cribs and irrigation/drainage e t c
4. MISCELLANEOUS STRUCTURES: This include bore-hole, water tank, farm shed, farm gate,
compost pit, fences e t c
5. Maintenance structures: This is a structure used for the repair and servicing of farm machines and
implements.
The following are some of the popular farm structures

1. Barns: It is constructed using sticks, mud and thatch. It is a framework of vertical and
horizontal sticks with palm fronds overhead for tying and storing yams in rows
2. Silos: it is a structure used in larger farms to store grains and beans. It can be constructed
in a circular and rectangular form.
3. Rhombus: It is a constructed round base seated on a raised mud platform. It is covered
with tightly woven grasses or thatch. It is used in storing grains like maize, sorghum,
millet, cowpea and groundnuts

smaller units for feeding or grazing animals

fishes. Usually it has a spillway known as the MUNK which allows the pond water to
drain out
