Assignment -3 / Ch – 01 / Relation & Function / 2024 - 2025

G. D. Goenka Public School, Dwarka

Assignment – 1 Class: XII
Subject: Mathematics

Q.1 Check whether the relation R defined in the set { 𝟏, 𝟐, 𝟑, 𝟒} as 𝑹 =

{(𝟏, 𝟐), (𝟐, 𝟐), (𝟏, 𝟏), (𝟒, 𝟒), ( 𝟏, 𝟑), (𝟑, 𝟑), (𝟑, 𝟐)} is Reflexive, Symmetric and Transitive.

Q.2 Show that the relation R in the set {1, 2, 3} given by R = {(1, 2), (2, 1)} is symmetric but neither Reflexive nor
Transitive.

Q.3 Show that R defined as R = {(a, b): a ≤ b, a, b R} is Reflexive and Transitive but not Symmetric.

Q.4 Check whether the following functions are one-one and onto.
a) 𝑓: 𝑵 → 𝑵 given by 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙𝟐
b) 𝑓: 𝑹 → 𝑹 given by 𝒇(𝒙) = 𝒙𝟐

Q.5 Let 𝐴 = {1, 2, 3}, 𝐵 = {4, 5, 6, 7} and let 𝑓 = {(1, 4), (2, 5), (3, 6)} be a function from A to B. Check
whether f is one-one or not.

Q.6 Show that the relation R in the set 𝐴 = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} given by:
𝑹 = {(𝒂, 𝒃): |𝒂 – 𝒃| 𝒊𝒔 𝒂 𝒎𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒊𝒑𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝟒} is an equivalence relation.

Q.7 3
Let 𝑓 ∶ 𝑹 – {− 5} → 𝑹 defined by 𝑓(𝑥) = 5𝑥 +
2𝑥
is bijective.

Q.8 Let R be a relation defined as 𝑅 = { (𝑥, 𝑦) ∶ 𝑥 and 𝑦 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑦 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠}. Show that R is an
equivalence relation. If 𝑥 is a brilliant student and 𝑦 is a slow learner and 𝑥 helps 𝑦 in his studies, what quality
does 𝑥 posses?

Q.9 Let R be a relation defined on the set of natural numbers N as 𝑅 = {(𝑥, 𝑦): 𝑥, 𝑦  𝑁, 2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 41}
Find the domain and range of R. Also, verify whether R is (i) reflexive, (ii) symmetric (iii) transitive

Q.10 Let N be the set of all natural numbers and let R be a relation on N × N, defined by :
(𝑎, 𝑏) 𝑅 (𝑐, 𝑑)  𝑎𝑑 = 𝑏𝑐 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑎𝑙𝑙 (𝑎, 𝑏), (𝑐, 𝑑)  𝑁 × 𝑁. Show that R is an equivalence relation on
N×N
Q.11 Let S be a relation on the set R of all real numbers defined by
𝑆 = {(𝑎, 𝑏) 𝑅 × 𝑅 ∶ 𝑎2 + 𝑏 2 = 1} Prove that S is not an equivalence relation on R.
Q.12 Show that the function f : R → {x  R : -1 < x < 1} defined by f (x) =
x
, x  R is one-one onto function.
1+ | x |

Q.13 Show that f : R → R, given by 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 − [𝑥], is neither one-one nor onto.
Q.14 n + 1
 , if nisodd
Show that f : N → N defined by f(x) =  2 is many-one onto function.
 n , if nis even
