Heat Exchanger
1. A Counter-flow heat exchanger of heat transfer area A = 12.5 m 2 is to cool oil [cph = 2000 J/(kg.
°C)] with water [cpc = 4170 J/(kg. °C)]. The oil enters at T h, in = 100°C and mh = 2 kg/s, while water
enters at Tc, in = 20°C and mc = 0.48 kg/s. The overall heat transfer coefficient is U m = 400 W/(m2.
°C). Calculate the exit temperature of water T c,out and the total heat transfer rate Q. [Ans: 85.6°C,
131.3 kW].
2. A Cross-flow heat exchanger of heat transfer area A = 8.4 m 2 is to heat air [cpc = 1005 J/(kg. °C)]
with water [cph = 4180 J/(kg. °C)]. Air enters at T c, in = 15°C and mc = 2 kg/s, while water enters at
Th,in = 90°C and mh = 0.25 kg/s. The overall heat transfer coefficient is U m = 250 W/(m2. °C).
Calculate the exit temperature of both air and water as well as the total heat transfer rate Q. [Ans:
43.1°C, 36°C, 56.43 kW].
3. A two shell pass, four tube pass heat exchanger of flow arrangement is to cool at m h = 1.5 kg/s [cph
= 2100 J/(kg. °C)] from Th,in = 90°C to Th,out = 40°C with water [cpc = 4180 J/(kg. °C)] entering at
Tc, in = 19°C and mc = 1 kg/s. The overall heat transfer coefficient is U m = 250 W/(m2. °C).
Calculate the heat transfer area required. [Ans: 25.2 m2]
4. A shell-and-tube condenser is constructed with 2.5 cm OD, single pass horizontal tubes with steam
condensing at Th = 54°C. The cooling water enters the tubes at T c,in = 18°C with a flow rate of m c =
0.7 kg/s per tube and leaves at T c,out = 36°C. The overall heat transfer coefficient based on the outer
surface of the tube is Um = 3509 W/(m2. °C). Calculate the tube length L and the heat transfer rate
per tube Q. [Ans: 7.4 m, 52.668 kW]
