PART 1: SETS AND BINARY OPERATIONS

1. In a class of 36 students, 25 study Chemistry, 22 study Mathematics, and 25 study Physics. 17

study Physics and Mathematics, 18 study Physics and Chemistry, and 15 study only one of the
three subjects. If every student studies at least one of the three subjects, find:
(a) the number of students who study all the three subjects,
(b) the number of students who study only Mathematics and Chemistry,
(c) the probability that a student selected at random studies only two of the three subjects.
2. The binary operation ∆ is defined on the set R of real numbers by m ∆ p = m2 + p2 – mp. Find:
(a) 4 ∆ 3
(b) x such that x y = y , stating the range of values of y for which x is defined.

PART 2: QUADRATICS

1. Express 3 x 2 − 6 x + 10 in the form a ( x − b) 2 + c , where a, b, and c are integers. Hence state the
minimum value of 3 x 2 − 6 x + 10 and the value of x at which it occurs
2. (a) Use the method of completing of squares to solve 6 x 2 − 18 x − 108 =
0.
(b) A function f, is defined by f ( x ) = 4 x 2 + kx + 9. Find the value(s) of k if the x − axis is a
tangent to the curve.
3. If α , β are the roots of 9 x 2 − 9 x + 2 =0 , find the values of
(a) α 2 + β 2
(b) (α − β )
2

(c) α 4 + β 4

PART 3: RATIONAL FUNCTIONS AND CUBIC FUNCTIONS

5x + 4
1. (a) Express in partial fractions
( x − 1)( x + 2 )
2

3 x 2 − 20 x + 6 x − 2 3 x
(b) Simplify the expression − +
x 2 − 3x x x −3
2. (a) Expand ( 3 x − 2 )( 4 x + 3)( x + 5 )
(b) If the polynomials x 3 + x 2 − 4 x + 5 and x 3 + 3 x − 7 have the same remainder when they are
divided by ( x − a ) , find the possible values of a .
3. (x 2
+ 5 x + 6 ) is a factor of the polynomial ax 3 + bx 2 + 11x + c . When this polynomial is divided
by ( x − 1) the remainder is 24.
(a) Find the values of a, b, and c.
(b) With these values, factorize the polynomial completely.
(c) Hence solve the equation ax 3 + bx 2 + 11x + c =0
TRIAL QUESTIONS ON BINOMIAL EXPANSION

1− x
1. Find the first four terms of 3
1+ x
2. Use the Pascal’s triangle to expand (1 + 2x ) simplifying all the terms. Use your expansion to
7

evaluate ( 0.98 ) correct to three decimal places.

7

3. (a) Write down the first four terms of the binomial expansion of 3 1 + x .

(b) Use your expansion in (a) to evaluate 3 9 , correct to three decimal places.

1 100
4. Expand in ascending powers of x up to the 4th term. Hence evaluate 3 , correct to
3
1− x 98
four decimal places.
5. If the first three terms of the expansion of (1 + ax ) are 1 + 12 x + 64 x 2 , find the values of n and a.
n

6. Use the binomial theorem to evaluate 9.09 to three decimal places.
