10TH CBSE SCIENCE 2&3 MARKS TEST 2

10th Standard

Science

Exam Time : 01:30:00 Hrs Total Marks : 50

10 x 2 = 20

1) A solution of a substance 'X' is used for white washing.

(i) Name the substance 'X' and write its formula.
(ii) Write the reaction of the substance 'X' named in (i) above with water.
2) Why is the amount of gas collected in one of the test tubes? name this gas.

3) Why do H C l, H N O etc., show acidic characters in aqueous solutions while solutions of

3

compounds like alcohol and glucose do not show acidic characters?

4) Why does an aqueous solution of an acid conduct electricity?

5) Why sodium is kept immersed in kerosene oil?

6) (a) Which gas is produced when dilute hydrochloric acid is added to a reactive metal?
(b) Write the chemical reaction when iron reacts with dilute sulphuric acid.
7) How would you distinguish experimentally between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid?

8) Would you be able to check if whether is hard by using a detergent?

9) Name a reducing agent that may be used to obtain manganese from manganese dioxide.

10) How will you test for the gas which is liberated when hydrochloric acid reacts with an
active metal?
10 x 3 = 30

11) Write the balanced chemical equation for the following and identify the type of reaction in
each case.
(a) Potassium bromide(aq) + Barium Iodide(aq) → Potassium iodide(aq) + Barium bromide(s)
(b) Zinc Carbonate(s) + Chlorine(g) → Hydrogen chloride(g)
(d) Magnesium(s) + Hydrochloric acid(aq) → Magnesium chloride(aq) + hydrogen(g)
12) Why is respiration considered an exothermic reaction? Explain

13) Why does distilled water not conduct electricity, whereas rain water does?

14) Five solutions A, B, C, D and E when tested with universal indicator showed pH as 4, 1,
11, 7 and 9 respectively. Which solution is
(a) neutral
(b) strongly alkaline
(c) strongly acidic
(d) weakly acidic
(e) weakly alkaline
Arrange the pH in increasing order of hydrogen-ion concentration.
15) Pratyush took sulphur powder on a spatula and heated it. He collected the gas evolved by
inverting a test tube over it as shown in the figure below
(a) What will be the action of gas on
(i) Dry litmus paper?

(ii) Moist litmus paper?

(b) Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction taking place.

16) What is an homologous series? Explain with an example.

17) How can ethanol and ethanoic acid be differentiated on the basis of their physical and
chemical properties?
18) When a copper wire was left in silver nitrate solution for sometime, it was observed that
the solution turned bluish green.
(i) Explain the observation.
(ii) Write the balanced chemical equation to represent the change taking place.
19) (a) Name the chief ore of iron. Write its formula.
(b) How is an iron ore concentrated? Describe it briefly.
(c) Draw a labelled diagram of the blast furnace used in the extraction of iron from its
concentrated ore.
20) (a) Name the compound CH3COOH and identify its functional group.
(b) Give a chemical test to identify this compound.
(c) Name the gas evolved when this compound acts on solid sodium carbonate. How would
you identify this gas?

10 x 2 = 20
1) (i) The chemical name of substance 'X' which is used for white washing is calcium oxide. The
chemical formula of calcium oxide is CaO.
(ii) Calcium oxide reacts vigorously with water to form calcium hydroxide (slaked lime).
CaO + H2O Ca(OH)2

2) Water (H2O) contains two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. Therefore, the amount of
hydrogen and oxygen produced during electrolysis of water is in a 2 : 1 ratio. During electrolysis,
since hydrogen goes to one test tube and oxygen goes to another, the amount of gas collected
in one of the test is double of the amount collected in the other.
3) Both hydrochloric acid and nitric acid form hydronium ions in aqueous solutions; while alcohol
and glucose do not dissociate to form hydronium ions instead they produce hydrogen which is
non-ionizable. So, , etc show acidic characters in aqueous solution while solutions
of compounds like alcohol and glucose do not conduct electricity.
H C l, H N O3

4) Acid on dissociation produces ions in aqueous solution, which conducts electricity Thus, an
aqueous solution of acid conducts electricity.
5) Sodium reacts vigorously with the oxygen of air. They catch fire and start burning when kept
open in the air. Hence, to protect them both sodium and potassium metals are kept immersed in
kerosene oil to prevent their reaction with oxygen.
6) (a) Hydrogen gas.
(b) When iron reacts with dilute sulphuric acid, iron (II) sulphate with the evolution of hydrogen
