Our Solar System

Diagram showing the solar system

The solar system is made up of the sun and eight known planets.
It is found in the milky way galaxy.
A galaxy is a large group of stars.

The Planets
Mercury
Mercury is closest to the sun.
It orbits the sun in only 88 days. (one complete revolution).
It is covered with craters and has no water nor air.

Venus
This is the brightest and hottest planet.
It has many volcanoes.
It is made up of rocks and is about the size of earth.
Venus and Earth are sometimes called the twin planets.
Mercury and Venus have no moons.
Venus is orange in colour.
It takes about 243 days to make a complete revolution.
Venus is also known as the “evening or morning planet”.

Earth
This is the third planet in the solar system.
It looks like a blue sapphire.
It has one natural satellite called the moon.
It is the fifth largest planet.
It is about (93 000 000) ninety-three million miles or (150 000 000) one hundred fifty million
kilometers away from the sun.
It is the only planet that contains enough water, temperature and oxygen to support life.
Earth spins on its axis.
An axis is an imaginary line that connects the north and south pole.
Earth’s axis is not straight but slanted or tilted.
Earth makes two movements. These are: rotation and revolution

Rotation is the spinning movement of the earth on its axis once every 24 hours or one day. It
causes day and night.

Revolution is the movement of the earth around the sun once every 365 ¼ days or one year.
Revolution causes the four seasons.
The four seasons are:
1. Autumn
2. Winter
3. Spring
4. Summer

Earth is blue green in colour.

It is also known as the watery planet.

Mars
This is known as the red planet because it glows with a strong reddish light.
This planet is made up of rocks and has carbon dioxide.
It is about half the size of planet earth.
Mars has two small moons.
It takes approximately 687 days to make a complete revolution.

Earths Climatic Zones

The world is divided into zones because of the amount of heat it receives.
These zones are called climatic zones.
These zones help us to understand some of the relationship between the sun and earth.
Earth is divided into five climatic zones.
1. Tropical zone
2. North temperate zone
3. South temperate zone
4. North polar zone
5. South polar zone

Diagram showing the earth’s climatic zones

The tropical zone
The tropical zone is the hottest climatic zone.
It is closest to the sun.
It receives most of the sun’s heat.
The tropical zone is also referred to as the torrid or equatorial zone.
The tropical zone is found between the tropic of cancer and the tropic of Capricorn.

Countries in the tropical zone receive strong sunlight.

They are hot countries with very high temperatures.
Countries in the tropical zone experiences two types of seasons.
These seasons are sunny and rainy.
Some countries in the tropical zone are:

2. ____________________
3. ____________________
4. ____________________
5. ____________________
6. ____________________
7. ____________________
