Summing/ Adder

Theory:
1. Subtractor

The circuit in which the output voltage is the subtraction of two input voltages is the
Subtarctor. Such circuit is obtained by using basic differential amplifier configuration.

The expression for the output voltage can be obtained by writing the Superposition
theorem.

Analysis

Assume the Vb=0 volt.

Then the circuit becomes inverting amplifier the output voltage due to only Va is denoted by
VOa. as

VOa=-RF/R1 (Va)

Assume the Va=0volt

The the circuit becomes non-inverting amplifier the output voltage due to Vb is denoted by
VOb. as

V1=[RF/(RF+R1)]*Vb

Dept. of Electronics & Telecommunication Engg. Page No.

Linear Integrated Circuits SGMCOE, Mahagaon, SY E&TC

VOb=(1+RF/R1)*[RF/(RF+R1)]V1

VOb=(RF/R1)V1

By combining these two outputs we get the output voltage of the difference amplifier as ,

VO = VOa + VOb

VO= -(RF/R1) Va + (RF/R1)Vb

VO= ( RF/R1 ) [ Vb – Va ]

The values of RF and R1 selected equal then the output voltage is proportional difference
between the two inputs signals.

2. Summing/ Adder Subtractor:

The circuit in which the output voltage is the summation of all non-inverting terminal
Voltage and –ve summation of all inverting terminal voltages.

The expression for the output voltage can be obtained by writing the Superposition
theorem.

Analysis

Assume the only Va supply acting and remaining Vb, Vc, Vd equals to Zero.=0

Then the circuit becomes inverting amplifier the output voltage due to only Va is denoted by
VOa. As

VOa=-R1/R1 (Va)

VOa=-Va

Assume the only Vb supply acting and remaining Va, Vc, Vd equals to Zero.=0

Then the circuit becomes inverting amplifier the output voltage due to only Vb is denoted by
VOb. As

Vob=-R1/R1 (Vb)

VOb=-Vb

Assume the only Vc supply acting and remaining Va, Vb, Vd equals to Zero.=0

Then the circuit becomes non-inverting amplifier the output voltage due to only Vc is denoted
by VOc. As

Dept. of Electronics & Telecommunication Engg. Page No.

Linear Integrated Circuits SGMCOE, Mahagaon, SY E&TC

V0c = ( 1 + R / R / 2 ) * ( Vc / 3 )

VOc = Vc

Assume the only Vd supply acting and remaining Va, Vb, Vc equals to Zero.=0

Then the circuit becomes non-inverting amplifier the output voltage due to only Vd is denoted
by VOd. As

VOd = ( 1 + R / R / 2 )*(Vd/3)

Voc = Vc

The total Output Voltage is Expressed as

VO = VOa + VOb + VOc + VOd

VO = -Va – Vb + Vc + Vd

Procedure:
1) Assemble these adder Subtractor circuit on bread board as per circuit diagram, one by one.
2) Apply various types of AC/DC input signals from function generator or Power Supply.
3) Note down the Output voltage.
