Ecv 4501 - MS - 1

The document outlines a marking scheme for a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering course, specifically for the Structural Design III exam. It includes various questions related to reinforced concrete beams, requiring calculations for steel areas, moments, and design parameters based on given material strengths and loads. The document is structured into five main questions, each with sub-questions and allocated marks.

QUESTION TWO
a) A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 300mm and an overall depth of 480mm. The
beam is simply supported over a span of 5m. Steel strength 𝑓𝑦 = 415𝑀𝑃𝑎 and concrete
𝑓𝑐′ = 28𝑀𝑃𝑎. Concrete cover is over 70mm from the centroid of the steel area. Unit
weight concrete is 23.5𝑘𝑁/𝑚3. Other than the weight of the beam, the beam carried a
superimposed dead of 18kN/m and a live load of 14kN/m. Use the strength design
method to;

i. Determine the maximum factored moment on the beam

QUESTION THREE
a) A reinforced concrete beam has a width of 300mm and an effective depth to tension
bars of 600mm. Compression reinforcement if needed will be placed at a depth of
60mm below the top. If 𝑓𝑐′ = 30𝑀𝑃𝑎 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑓𝑦 = 414 𝑀𝑃𝑎, determine the tension

load of 25kN/m and a uniform live load of 40kN/m. Assuming 𝑓𝑐′ =
21𝑀𝑃𝑎 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑓𝑦 = 312 𝑀𝑃𝑎 and compression reinforcement, if necessary, shall be
placed at a depth 80mm from the outermost compressive concrete;
