How To Prepare 1N

The document provides a detailed procedure for preparing 1N/1M solutions of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and hydrochloric acid (HCl), including calculations based on molecular weight, specific gravity, and percentage assay. For H2SO4, 54.4 mL of 100% acid is needed for 1M, resulting in a 1N solution of 27.2 mL. For HCl, 82.81 mL of concentrated acid is required for 1M preparation, with corresponding volumes for larger quantities also provided.

HOW TO PREPARE 1N/1M OF H 2 SO4 ?

Given:
Molecular weight = 98.08 g/mol
Specific gravity = 1.84
Percentage Assay = 98%
 1M ≡ 1000ml ≡?
Using Eq’n:
mass
Density = volume

Therefore,
mass 98.08
Volume = ….. = …. = 53.3 mL
density 1.84
98% H 2 SO4 = 53.3mL
53.3 X 100
Therefore, 100% H 2 SO4 =
98
= 54.4mL
100% H 2 SO4 ≡ 1M ≡ 54.4mL
H 2 SO4 is a dibasic acid; it contains two acidic protons. Thus 1M solution of H 2 SO4 will be 2N.
Therefore,
1N H 2 SO4 = 27.2mL

1% H 2 SO4 = 5.44mL
2% H 2 SO4 = 10.88mL
4% H 2 SO4 = 21.76mL
HOW TO PREPARE 1M/1N OF HYDROCHLORIC ACID (HCL)?
Given:
Molecular weight = 36.46 g/mol
Specific gravity = 1.19
Percentage Assay = 37%
 1M ≡ 1000ml ≡?
Using Eq’n:
mass
Density = volume

Therefore,
mass 36.46
Volume = ….. = …. = 30.64 mL
density 1.19
1M 37% HCL = 30.64mL in 1000mL of D/W
30.64 X 100
Therefore, 1M 100% HCL =
37
= 82.81mL

Therefore, 1000mL of 1M HCL required 82.81mL of concentrated HCL acid.

1L= 82.81mL
2L= 164.62mL
3L= 248.43mL
4L= 331.4mL
