Cause and Effect Connectors in Social Issues

Understand how to express relationships between causes and effects in social issues.

What Are Cause and Effect Connectors?

• Connectors that show the relationship between a reason (cause) and a result (effect).

• They help create logical and clear sentences.

Cause Connectors (Introduce the Reason)

Because – "Homelessness is increasing because housing costs are too high."

Due to – "Many children drop out of school due to financial problems."
Since – "Since pollution affects health, respiratory diseases are common."
As – "As deforestation increases, wildlife loses its habitat."

These connectors answer "Why?"

Slide 4: Effect Connectors (Introduce the Result)

Therefore – "Air pollution is severe; therefore, many cities limit car use."
As a result – "Social media spreads misinformation; as a result, trust declines."
Consequently – "High dropout rates exist; consequently, unemployment rises."
So – "Many families lack access to healthcare, so diseases spread."

Tip: These connectors answer "What happens next?"

Slide 5: Double-Function Connectors

Because of this – "Climate change leads to extreme weather. Because of this, floods occur more
often."
For this reason – "Education improves job opportunities. For this reason, scholarships are
essential."

Use these to connect both cause and effect in one sentence.

Complete the sentence with a connector:

1. The company closed down ______ many workers lost their jobs. (Effect)

2. Child labor exists ______ poverty forces children to work. (Cause)

Cause Connectors (Introduce the Reason)

1. Because – "Many children suffer from malnutrition because they lack access to nutritious food."

2. Due to – "Crime rates have increased due to unemployment and poverty."

3. Owing to – "Owing to deforestation, many animal species are losing their habitats."
4. Since – "Since pollution is rising, more people are developing respiratory diseases."

5. As – "As the digital divide widens, many low-income students struggle with online education."

Effect Connectors (Introduce the Result)

1. Therefore – "Many students do not have access to quality education; therefore, social inequality
persists."

2. As a result – "Fast food consumption is increasing; as a result, obesity rates are rising."

3. Consequently – "Water pollution is worsening; consequently, marine life is at risk."

4. So – "The cost of healthcare is high, so many people avoid visiting the doctor."

5. Thus – "Cyberbullying has become a major issue; thus, many teenagers suffer from mental health
problems."

Double-Function Connectors (Show Both Cause and Effect in One Sentence)

1. Because of this – "Air pollution is increasing. Because of this, cities are implementing stricter
environmental laws."

2. For this reason – "Deforestation contributes to climate change. For this reason, reforestation
projects are essential."
