Assignment Brief and Guidance:
Scenario:
You work as a senior engineer for a company that manufactures engine parts and electronic
devices for an automobile company. You have been investigating a number of issues encountered
by a trainee Engineer in the production and service areas of the company and have been given
access to a range of manufacturing data. Your project manager has asked you to analyse the
following situations and provide appropriate solutions for the tasks where necessary .
Part 1:
a) A 3-bit parallel adder is found in a digital circuit (Figure 1).

Figure 1:3-bit parallel adder

i) If the inputs to the adder are A=100 and B=110 find the output. (Output of the adder
is summation of A and B).
ii) If the two inputs are given to a binary multiplier (made of binary adders) find the
result.

b) Consider the following two numbers in different base systems.

2𝐴3𝐹16 and 62510 .
i) Covert the above numbers into octal numbers.
ii) Perform the addition and multiplication of the above two numbers. (You should
perform addition and multiplication in hexadecimal system and octal system
both)
iii) Convert the results in part (ii) to decimal number system and verify that you get
the correct answer in both number systems(octal and hexadecimal).
Part 2:
a) In a R-L series circuit shown in figure 2, 𝑉𝐿 leads I by 900 and may be written as 𝑗𝑉𝐿 ,the
vertical axis being regarded as the imaginary axis of an Argand diagram. Thus 𝑉𝑅 + 𝑗𝑉𝐿 = 𝑉
And since 𝑉𝑅 = 𝐼𝑅, 𝑉 = 𝐼𝑋𝐿 (𝑋𝐿 = 2𝜋𝑓𝐿, 𝑋𝐿 𝑖𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒) and 𝑉 = 𝐼𝑍 (where Z
is the impedance).Then 𝑅 + 𝑗𝑋𝐿 = 𝑍.

Figure 2:R-L circuit

You are asked to deteremine the resistance and series inductance for each of the following
impendances 𝑍1 and 𝑍2 assuming a frequency of 50Hz.

2|Page
i) 5 + 4j
ii) 3 + 7j
b)
i. Express 𝑍1 and 𝑍2 in polar form and exponential form.
𝑍
ii. Find 𝑍1 𝑍2 and 𝑍1 in polar form and exponential form.
2
3
iii. Deduce 𝑍1 using De Moivre’s theorem.
iv. Show that 𝑠𝑖𝑛3𝜃 = 3𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃 − 4𝑠𝑖𝑛3 𝜃 using De Moivre’s theorem.

Part 3:
You are required to perform a loop current analysis for the following electric circuit shown in
figure 3.

Figure 3: Electric circuit

A trainee technician has written down 3 linear equations to the above system using Kirchhoff’s
law for each loop shown above as follows.

𝑖1 + 25( 𝑖1 − 𝑖2 ) + 50( 𝑖1 − 𝑖3 ) = 10

25( 𝑖2 − 𝑖1 ) + 30𝑖2 + ( 𝑖2 − 𝑖3 ) = 0

50( 𝑖3 − 𝑖1 ) + ( 𝑖3 − 𝑖2 ) + 55𝑖3 = 0

However, he needs your assistance to solve the above system using your knowledge of matrix

methods using the following two different methods.

i) Gaussian elimination method

ii) Inverse matrix method

3|Page
In addition, you are required to evaluate and validate your solutions using any appropriate

software. (You should show all the functions/methods used)

The results obtained from the Gaussian elimination method and the inverse matrix method are
validated through the use of Excel software in the following steps. By applying these methods in Excel,
we can cross-check and confirm the accuracy of the solutions. The validation process involves
comparing the solutions derived from both mathematical techniques, ensuring consistency and
correctness of the answers through step-by-step calculations within Excel's computational
environment.

Step 1

Label the matrices in the Excel sheet as A, B, and X. Matrix A should contain the coefficients, B the
constants, and X the solutions.

Step 2

To compute the inverse matrix, use the function =MINVERSE(A2:C4) in Excel.

31 | P a g e
Step 3

Enter the following function to multiply the inverse matrix of A with the matrix of B.
=MMULT(A7:C9,E2:E4)

Step 4

Next, we can obtain the values for i1, i2, and i3 as outlined below.
