Research is the foundation of knowledge creation, problem-solving, and informed decision-

making. This book is designed to provide a structured and comprehensive guide to research
methods and report writing, equipping students, academics, and professionals with the necessary
tools to conduct effective research. The book is divided into five key sections, each covering
crucial aspects of research from conception to publication.

Chapter 1: Introduction to Research

1.1 Meaning of Research

Research is a systematic process of investigating a particular problem or phenomenon to

generate new knowledge or apply existing knowledge in innovative ways. According to
Theodorson & Theodorson (1969), research refers to "any honest attempt to study a problem
systematically or to add to human knowledge." Saunders et al. (2007) define research as
"something people undertake to find out things in a systematic way, thereby increasing their
knowledge."

Research serves as a fundamental tool for innovation, policy formulation, and problem-solving
across various disciplines, including science, business, and social sciences.

1.2 Purpose and Importance of Research

Research is crucial for several reasons:

 Knowledge Expansion: Enhances understanding of various concepts and phenomena.

 Problem-Solving: Provides solutions to societal and organizational challenges.
 Decision Making: Facilitates evidence-based decision-making in governance and
business.
 Technological Advancement: Supports innovations and improvements in technology.
 Educational Development: Forms the foundation of academic learning and professional
growth.

Developed countries allocate significant resources to research, recognizing its role in national
development. However, in many developing nations, research funding remains a challenge,
limiting innovation and progress.

1.3 Types of Research

Research can be classified into several categories based on purpose, methodology, and
application.
1.3.1 Theoretical vs. Applied Research

 Theoretical Research: Aims at expanding knowledge without necessarily applying it to

immediate practical problems. Example: Studying the behavior of electrons in quantum
physics.
 Applied Research: Focuses on solving specific practical problems. Example:
Developing a vaccine for a new disease.

1.3.2 Exploratory, Descriptive, and Explanatory Research

 Exploratory Research: Investigates new areas where little information exists.

 Descriptive Research: Describes characteristics of a population or phenomenon.
 Explanatory (Causal) Research: Determines cause-and-effect relationships.

1.3.3 Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Research

 Quantitative Research: Uses numerical data for statistical analysis.

 Qualitative Research: Explores concepts and experiences through non-numerical data.
 Mixed Research: Combines both qualitative and quantitative methods.
