Laboratory Activity 9
Project Title
Traffic Light Control using IoT with motion sensor
1. Objective(s):

1. Develop a control system capable of controlling the traffic lights to turn green, yellow and red for
government and private emergency vehicles
2. Integrate a control system for the quick response of the emergency unit and avoid accidents in
intersections that might cause property damages
3. Establish a wireless connectivity system using IoT based communication w/ Blynk App that
facilitates the system from the sensors to web applications.

2. Background

Traffic congestion and accidents at intersections are significant issues, especially when emergency
vehicles need to pass through. Traditional traffic light systems do not prioritize emergency vehicles, leading
to delays and potential accidents. This laboratory activity aims to develop a smart traffic light control system
that can detect emergency vehicles and adjust the traffic lights accordingly. The system will use IoT
technology and the Blynk app for manual control, ensuring quick response times and reducing the risk of
accidents.

3. Materials and Equipment

1. NodeMCU ESP8266
2. LEDs
3. PIR sensor
4. Jumping wires

5. Procedures

Step 1: Testing Normal Traffic Light Behavior

1. Testing Normal sequence:
- Power the system and check if the traffic lights follow this sequence:
1. Red light ON for 5 seconds.
2. Yellow light ON for 2 seconds.
3. Green light ON for 5 seconds.
4. Yellow light ON for 2 seconds before returning to red.
Repeat the sequence to ensure consistency.

2. LED transitions:
- Making sure only one LED is ON at any given time.
- Check for smooth transitions without delays or flickering.

Step 2: Testing PIR Motion Detection

1. Simulate motion detection:
- Place the PIR sensor where it can detect movement. Move your hand or walk in front of it.
- Confirm that:
- The system interrupts the normal sequence.
- The red light turns ON immediately when motion is detected.
- Stop moving and wait. Check if the system resumes the normal traffic light sequence after a few
seconds.

Step 3: Testing Manual Control with Blynk

1. Open the Blynk App:
- Ensure the NodeMCU is online and connected to the app.

2. Test manual control buttons:

- Use the Blynk app to control each LED (Red, Yellow, Green).
- Check if the corresponding LED turns ON and OFF immediately without affecting the other LEDs.

3. Switch between manual and automatic modes:

- Activate manual control and verify that the normal sequence and motion detection stop.
- Deactivate manual control and confirm the normal traffic light sequence resumes.

Step 4: Final Validation

1. Test the entire system together:
- Let the traffic light run normally for one full cycle.
- Trigger the PIR sensor and observe if the red light activates as expected.
- Use Blynk to manually control LEDs, then return to automatic mode.
5. Testing Protocol
Preparation
1. Check your components:
- Ensure all components (NodeMCU, LEDs, PIR sensor, and wires) are properly connected as per the
circuit diagram.
- Confirm the NodeMCU is powered and connected to Wi-Fi.
- Verify the Blynk app is set up with your project and virtual pins configured for the LEDs.

2. Create and Upload the code:

- Use the Arduino IDE to upload the code to the NodeMCU.
- Open the Serial Monitor to ensure no errors during initialization.
6. Presentation of Result, Analysis, and Interpretation

Presentation
The system was tested in various scenarios to ensure its functionality. The normal traffic light sequence
was verified, and the PIR sensor's ability to detect motion and interrupt the sequence was confirmed.
Manual control via the Blynk app was also tested to ensure seamless switching between automatic and
manual modes.

Analysis
The system successfully followed the normal traffic light sequence, with each LED turning on and off as
expected. The PIR sensor accurately detected motion, causing the red light to activate immediately. Manual
control through the Blynk app was responsive, allowing for real-time control of the LEDs without affecting
the other lights.
Interpretation
The results indicate that the system can effectively manage traffic lights, prioritizing emergency vehicles
when motion is detected. The integration of IoT technology and the Blynk app provides a reliable method
for manual control, ensuring flexibility and quick response times.

7. Conclusion:

The laboratory activity successfully demonstrated the development of a smart traffic light control system.
The system met all the objectives, including the ability to control traffic lights for emergency vehicles,
integrate a quick response control system, and establish wireless connectivity using IoT. The project
highlights the potential for improving traffic management and safety at intersections.

This innovation not only addresses the immediate need for faster emergency response but also promotes
safety for all road users by reducing the likelihood of accidents at intersections. It represents a significant
step towards smarter and more responsive urban traffic management, leveraging technology like sensors,
GPS, and communication networks to create real-time adaptability.

For governments, such a system reflects a commitment to public welfare and efficient resource utilization.
For private entities, it demonstrates the integration of technology with societal responsibility. Ultimately, this
control system bridges the gap between technological advancement and practical application, creating
safer and more efficient roads for everyone.
