Project Description

Introduction / Problem Statement:

At busy traffic intersections, regulating the flow of vehicles is essential
for safety and efficiency. A traffic signal system employs colored lights
(Red, Yellow, and Green) to control traffic movements across roads
intersecting at a junction. Our project focused on constructing a basic
DC traffic signal circuit manually to simulate this control mechanism for
a typical 4-way intersection.

The main objective was to design, simulate, and implement a

functioning traffic light system using basic electronic components and
simulate it using PSpice software before implementing it on a
breadboard.

2. Circuit Design

Design and Operation

The circuit design uses three slide switches to control a total of 12

LEDs: 4 red, 4 yellow, and 4 green LEDs. The control is simple:

 One switch controls the RED and GREEN lights for two opposite
roads.

 Another switch does the same for the other two roads.

 The third switch is dedicated to operating the YELLOW lights,

simulating the transition period.

Each LED is connected in series with a 270Ω resistor to limit current

and prevent damage. The power source is a 9V DC supply. The
operation is fully manual, giving the user direct control of light
transitions.
3. Simulation Results (Screenshots):

Figure: Circuit Diagram for the project

The circuit was successfully simulated in PSpice with the following

observations:

 No compilation or runtime errors.

 LEDs responded correctly to switch toggling.

 Current and voltage levels were within safe limits as per design.
4. Circuit Construction and Testing:

Design Style and Accuracy

The breadboard layout was organized logically, closely following the
schematic diagram. Proper wire management ensured ease of testing and
minimal short-circuit risk.
Component Assembly
 Voltage Source: A 9V battery was used.
 Switches: 3 slide switches provided control over the different LED
sets.
 LEDs and Resistors: LEDs were paired with 270Ω resistors to
ensure safe operation.
 Wiring: Jumper wires were used to make all necessary
connections.
Output Testing
When the switches were operated, the LEDs lit up accurately:
 Red and green LEDs lit in pairs on opposite roads.
 Yellow LEDs blinked during the transition phases.

Conclusion:
This project gave us hands-on experience in designing, simulating, and
constructing a basic DC traffic signal system. It helped strengthen our
understanding of fundamental electronic components and their
application in real-life systems. The manual approach allowed us to
appreciate the logical structure behind automated systems and practice
essential teamwork and communication skills.
