TASK 1: READING COMPREHENSION
Read the story below and then answer questions 1 - 5.
Inter-houses competitions are held in our school once in a year. The second term, which is the
longest, has enough time to learn and play different games for that special day. Every student in the
whole schoolbelonged to either 'Yellow' or 'Blue' house. All the participants from both houses were
prepared and ready that Saturday. The venue was packed to capacity as students of both houses
showed up to cheer their players. When majority of the games were played and points awarded to
the two houses, the climax of the daywas a hotly contested football match. The sound of the whistle
set the ball rolling. Both teams played with lots of energy and skills. Mixed shouts of cheers and
jeers filled the field.Ninety minutes and extra time produced no winner. Penalty kicks had to be
taken to determine which team would carry the day. The Blues were favoured lastly as their
goalkeeper saved three penalty kicks from their opponents. When the last announcement was made,
the Blues secured a clean victory. They received the most prestigious prize as the Yellows settled
for a consolation prize.
a)Why are inter-houses competitions held in second term?

e)What is the meaning of the word "prestigious" as used in the story?
Makode and his wife lived at the foot of a mountain where they cultivated crops and kept livestock.
Their farm was surrounded from all sides by a thick forest. One season Makode had to do all the
work on the far because his wife was expectant. At last, she was blessed with twins. They named
the two bouncing baby boys Ham and Dan. Years went by and now the boys could walk and eat
on their own. So to relieve her husband of the tiresome farm work, Ham and Dan were left alone
with enough food and water. However, the door was always securely closed.
An ogre was living in the forest and learnt of the twins being left alone. He secretly visited the
couple's house carrying a crude weapon to break the door. The ogre was successful and
swallowed up the boys instantly. That was too much a meal. So the ogre took a nap under a tree
near the house.
Fortunately, Makode and his wife had heard some peculiar noise from the direction of their
house. They did not hesitate but responded by going to check on their sons. The sight of the ogre
with a bulgy belly announced trouble. The absence of the twins prompted Makode to carry his
sword. He mercilessly slit open the ogre's belly and out came Ham and Dan. They were
unharmed but looked exhausted and out of breath. The ogre passed on but the couple was very
grateful to God.(Adapted from African folktales)

farmer's children were still there watching all this with great interest. Suddenly, the snake
pounced on one of his sons but he was quick enough to escape its lethal bite. Seeing all this, the

2.UFAHAMU( AL.15)
Soma taarifa ifuatayo kisha ujibu maswali
matrela mara nyingi huendesha magari hayo wakiwa walevi.
Hata hivyo, lawama haiwezi kuelekezewa madereva pekee. Ukiangazia barabara nchini utapata kuwa
barabara nchini Kenya haziko katika hali nzuri . Zile za lami zimekuwa na mashimo makubwa
ambapo mvua ikinyesha hufanya vidimbi mithili ya machimbo ya madini yaliyojaa maji baada ya
kuachwa wazi.
ukarabati ili kuzirudisha katika kiwango ambacho zitaweza kufaa tena.
Wananchi pia inafaa waelimishwe ili wasikubali kuingia kwenye magari ambayo tayari yamejaaa kupita
kiasi. Hili litawasaidia wananchi wenyewe kudumisha usalama wao barabarani.
wachukuliwe hatua kali, matatizo haya yataisha.
