EPD_Fourth Lecture

The document discusses different types of absorbers used in Aspen V10, including tray and packed columns, and factors influencing their selection. It also presents two exercises involving the absorption of H2SO4 and CO2 in specific conditions, requiring calculations for efficiency and concentration. Key details include operating pressures, temperatures, and flow rates for the processes described.

4rd Lecture
Types of Absorbers in Aspen V10
• Absorber

• Refluxed Absorber

• Reboiled Absorber
Types of Absorbers in Aspen V10
• Tray columns, also known as plate columns, contain a series of
horizontal plates (trays) stacked on top of each other within a vertical
column.

• Packed columns are filled with a packing material, which can be

structured packing (such as metal or ceramic) or random packing
(such as Raschig rings or Berl saddles).
Types of Absorbers in Aspen V10
• The choice between trays and packed columns depends on factors
such as the specific separation requirements, operating conditions,
space limitations, and economic considerations.
Exercise 1

H2SO4: Pressure 1 atm, Temp 10 Celsius, Flow rate 1000 kgmole/h

Top stage pressure 1 atm, bottom stage pressure 2 atm
Optional Top stage Temp 20 Celsius, Optional bottom stage Temp 137 Celsius
Efficiency of all trays 0.9
Exercise 2
• CO2 is absorbed into propylene carbonate in a packed column. The
inlet gas is 20 mol% CO2 and 80 mol% methane.
• The gas stream flows at a rate of 2 m3/s and the column operates at
60 Celsius and 60.1 atm.
• The inlet solvent flow is 2000 kmol/h.
• Determine the concentration of CO2 (mol%) in the exit gas stream,
and the column diameter (m).
Exercise 2
• Property package: Sour PR
• Absorber internal type: Packed
• Packing type: Raschig (Ceramic)
• Packing vendor: Raschig
• Packing Dimensions: 15 mm
• Column Height: 0.5 m
