Are you ready to listen and learn class?

D. Lesson Proper
Now, our topic for today is all about
Different Weather dISTURBANCES.

Look t the picture. What can you say about it?

What is the meaning of PAGASA? Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical

and Astronomical Services
Administration

What are their responsibilities? To monitor and gives information

about weather and climate news and
update.

What do we mean by weather disturbances? A weather disturbance is a term

used to describe a change in
atmospheric conditions or weather
patterns.
Are also referred to as natural
disasters, as they are capable of
wreaking havoc on roads, power
A general term that describes any pulse of energy lines, and buildings.
moving through the atmosphere.
Different Weather
Disturbances

Depression
The first stage of a tropical weather event is called
a tropical depression. Meteorologists sometimes
refer to these formations as a tropical wave,
disturbance, feature, system, or disturbance.
Tropical depressions are cyclones with winds that
gust at 38 miles per hour (33 knots) or less. While
cyclones aren't as strong as tropical storms or
hurricanes, they can bring significant amounts of
rain, thunderstorms, and devastating floods.

Storm

Meteorologists upgrade a tropical depression to a

tropical storm when the cyclone's circulation is
more organized and has sustained wind speeds of
39 to 73 miles per hour (34 to 63 knots).

Everybody read what is on the screen. Tropical storms produce large

amounts of rain and can cause
enough wind and wave activity
todamage boats and erode beaches. A
tropical storm may occur in any of
Earth’s ocean basins in which
tropical cyclones are found (North
Atlantic, northeast Pacific, central
Pacific, northwest and southwest
Typhoon or Hurricane

When a storm system has sustained winds of over

74 miles per hour (64 knots), a spiral arrangement
of thunderstorms with a low- pressure center.
Meteorologists generally use the term “hurricane”
for storms in the Atlantic Ocean and the word
“typhoon” for those in the Pacific Ocean.
Hurricanes are the most dangerous and devastating
type of tropical system.

Hurricane versus Typhoon

Hurricane Typhoon
From the native From the Chinese Tai
Americans word Fun which means
“Huracan” means a big “great wind” referred
wind originated in the to winds that
West Atlantic. developed in the North
Pacific.
Damage more land Stronger than
areas than typhoon hurricanes because it
which cause damage develops where water
to countries coastlines. is warm.
Move both clockwise Move clockwise
and counterclockwise.

Causes of typhoon/hurricane
 Pre-existing disturbance
 Warm ocean water
 Low atmospheric stability
 Upper atmosphere divergence

Tropical Cyclone
A storm system characterized by a low-pressure
center and numerous thunderstorms that produce
strong winds and heavy rain.

Causes of tropical cyclones

 Water temperatures of at least 26.5°C
(79.7°F)
 Rapid cooling with height
 High humidity
 Low amounts of wind shear
 Pre existing system of disturbed weather.

Typhoons in the Philippines

 Around 19 tropical cyclones or storms
 The PAGASA releases tropical cyclone
warnings in the form of Public Storm
Warning Signals

Nika made landfall as a typhoon in Dilasag,

Aurora, on Monday, November 11. It then
crossed Isabela, Ifugao, Mountain Province, and
Ilocos Sur, and weakened into a severe tropical
storm.
Effects of Cyclone
 Torrential rain that can cause flooding
 Extremely strong winds that carry debris
that can be lethal
 Damage buildings and property
 Destroy crops
 Capsize boats at sea
 Deaths due to drowning
 Infrastructure destroyed

Tsunami

- Tsunami are ocean waves that can reach

the height of 100 feet, crash onto land.
- Japanese word means “harbor wave”
- 80% of all tsunamis take place in the Ring
of Fire in the Pacific Ocean.

How Tsunamis Form

Tsunamis are formed as a result of powerful under

water earthquakes, volcanic eruption, or a
landslide.

Effects of Tsunami
 Affect people, mentally, emotionally, and
financially.
 People are left homeless and careless due
to the flooding and other destructions.
 Loss of lives
 Destroy the crops and flood the city

Before a disaster, you can prepare a plan, gather

supplies, and identify hazards. During a disaster,
you can stay calm, take shelter, and check on
others. After a disaster, you can check for
injuries, listen for instructions, and help
neighbors.

E. APPLICATION
Directions: During calamities or different weather
disturbances coming we need to know the nearest
evacuation center so that we can easily evacuate if
we are being told so. For your activity, draw a map
from your house going to the nearest evacuation
center in your community. In this way, it is not
difficult anymore for you and your family to
evacuate.

IV. EVALUATION
DIRECTIONS: Identify the following statement if it is Tropical Depression, Tropical Storm,
or Typhoon.
_____________1. It has sustained winds of over 74 miles per hour (64 knots).
_____________2. A cyclone with a wind that gust at 38 miles per hour (33 knots) or less
_____________3. It has sustained wind speeds of 39 to 73 miles per hour (34 to 63 knots).
_____________4. It is the most dangerous and devastating type of tropical system.
_____________5. A tropical cyclone that produces large amounts of rain, and can cause
enough wind and wave activity to damage boats and erode beaches.

DIRECTIONS: Read and understand each statement. On the space provided write TRUE if
the statement is correct and FALSE if it is not correct.
_____1. Keep updating yourself through listening to the radio and watching television if there
is a typhoon.
_____ 2. The first aid kit must be placed in an accessible area in your house.
_____ 3. Do not evacuate immediately if you are being told by the rescue team to evacuate.
_____ 4. Essential supplies like food and water must not be prepare during a typhoon.
_____ 5. Save contacts with your family and friends so that you can access them easily
during a typhoon.

V. ASSIGNMENT
In your notebook, define what is a low-pressure area
