Grade : 9

Subject : Mathematics

Unit : 5

Main topic : Geometry and measurement

Sub topics : FURTHER ON CONGRUNCY AND SIMILARITY

CONGRUNCY Of TRIANGLES

NB : Two geometric figures are congruent if they have exactly the same
shape and exactly the same size .
That is three sides and three angles of the frst triangles are exactly equal with
the corresponding three sides and three angles of the second triangle.

Notation symbol for congruency is “ ≡ “

For example: let ∆ABC and ∆EFG is are said to be congruent if the following
corresponding parts of the two triangles are congruent
NB :

√ The sides of a triangle are said to be included between two angles if and only
the vertices of the angle are the end points of the segment ( the side ..

√ The angles of a triangle are said to be included between two sides if and only
the sides of the angle contain the two sides of a triangle .

SSS(side side side. congruency theorem

Remark: where ∆ is used to mean “triangle”

Where ≡ is used to mean “congruent to”

Consider ∆ABC and ∆DEF

Prove that ∆ABC and ∆DEF are congruent

´ (given.
´ ≡ DE
Proof 1. AB
´ (given.
´ ≡ DE
2. AC
´ ≡ DF
3. BC ´ (given.

4. ∆ABC ≡ ∆EFD (SSS congruency theorem.

But ∆ABC is not congruent to ∆DEF because the corresponding sides

´ is not congruent to DE
1 . AB ´

´ is not congruent to EF
2 BC ´

´
´ is not congruent to DF
3 . AC

If you try to overlap ∆ABC and ∆DEF one doesn’t coincide with the other.

1. SAS (side angle side.congruency theorem Consider ∆ABC and ∆KP

Proof ´ ≡ PK
1 AC ´ (given.---------------------S

2 ∠C= ∠K = 71° (given. ----------------A

´ ≡ KQ
3. CB ´ (given. ---------------------------- S

4. ∆ACB ≡ ∆EPKQ (SAS congruency theorem.

Examples : -
Solution : - nn PQR , RQ = 7.1 CM --- S

PR = 7CM ---- S

PQ = 8.2 CM ---- S

∠Q = 58°
nn ∆ABC , AB = 7.1 CM --- S

BC = 7CM ------ S

AC = 8.2 CM ---- S

nn ∆MLN , LN = 7CM ---- S

∠Q = 58° ----- A

LM = 8.2 CM ---- S

nn ∆MLN , XY = 7.1CM ---- S

∠X = 58° ----- A
XZ = 8.2 CM ---- S

∴ ∆ABC ≡∆ QRP by SSS congruency theorem

∆ZXY ≡ ∆PQR by SAS congruency theorem

∆MLN And PQR are not congruent
