Sem 2 Experiment 2

The document outlines a laboratory procedure to determine the relative viscosity of a liquid using an Ostwald viscometer and a pyknometer. It includes the theory based on Poiseuille's equation, a step-by-step procedure for measuring flow times of distilled water and the sample liquid, and calculations for relative density. Observations and results are recorded to conclude the relative viscosity of the supplied liquid.

Object: To determine the relative viscosity of a given liquid at laboratory temperature

Apparatus: 1. Ostwald viscometer. 2. Pyknometer. 3. Beakers, ete.

Chemicals: Supplied solution
Theory: The determination of relative viscosity of a liquid, the given Poiseuille's equation will
be used. It related to the flow of aliquid with volume. pressure and time of flow through a
capillary tube: (/-time, v-volume, I-Aength of capillary, r- radius of capillary. p-pressure]

If we like to determine the viscosity of a liquid with respect to water then we have:
Procedure:

1. The Ostwaldviscometer was cleaned and filled up with distilled water (bigger bulb up to
half or litle more) and then suck through a rubber tube, fited with the viscometer, til
upper mark of smaller bulb.
2. Water was then allowed to come down tothe lower mark of the viscometer and time was
noted forflow of a fixed volume of liquid.
3. Step 2was repeated repeated for 4 times.
4. Then the viscometer was rinsed with provided sample liquid and time of flow of given
sample liquid was noted without changing the setup. The process was repeated for 4
times.
5. To determine the relative density of the liquid, weight of an empty Pyknometer was
taken. Then weight of the pyknometer filled with i) distilled water and filled with ii)
supplied sample liquid were taken separately.
Observations:

Measurement of relative density using RD bottle:

Mass of the emptv RD bottle = m)
Mass of RD bottle with water = m;

So, mass of water filled in =m, - m

Mass of RD botle with liquid = m,

Therefore, Inass of liquid filled in mj- m

So, the relative density of thc liquid
