4-3 Lesson Day 2

This document provides notes on transforming the absolute value parent function, including reflections, stretches, compressions, and shifts. It outlines the steps for graphing an absolute value function and includes examples for analyzing transformations, vertices, axes of symmetry, and determining domain and range. Additionally, it includes exercises for writing function rules and finding minimum and maximum values on specified intervals.

Lesson 4-3 Transforming the Absolute Value Parent Function Day 2

Including Vertex, Axis of Symmetry, Domain and Range—Interval and set notation

Transformation “Quick” Notes

Transform left to right:

• Reflection across x-axis: y = –f(x)

• Vertical Stretch/Compression: y = af(x)

|a| > 1 stretch (expansion); |a| < 1 compression (shrink)

• Reflection across y-axis: y = f(–x)

• Horizontal Stretch/Compression: y = f( 1 x)
b
(reminder - reciprocal)
1 1
> 1 stretch (expansion); < 1 compression (shrink)
b b

• Horizontal shift (right/left): y = f(x – h) right

y = f(x + h) left

** Factor out any negative or coefficient (other than one)

Example: for y = f(–2x – 6) , factor out –2
y = f(–2(x + 3))
1
reflection across y-axis, then horizontal compression by then left 3
2

• Vertical shift (up/down): y = f(x) + k up

y = f(x) – k down
*These notes are written for an "easy" way to learn; they are not written with proper math terms.
To graph an absolute value function of the form
1
g(x) = a| (x − h)| + k, apply the transformations of f(x) = |x|
b
using the normal order of operations (yes , order matters):
1. a -

2. b -

3. h -

4. k -

EXAMPLE:
Describe the transformations of g(x) = 2|x + 3| from the parent
absolute value function. Analyze and graph g(x).
Transformations:
1. vertical stretch by a factor of 2 (each point is twice the number of
units away from the x-axis)
2. horizontal translation left 3 units (each point moved left 3 units)

Vertex: (–3, 0)
Axis of Symmetry: x = –3
Give the domain and range using interval notation.

Range:
Describe the transformations and analyze. Graph.

3. f (x) = |–3x| + 1

** Factor out negative or coefficients (other than one) **

Example: for g(x) = |–2x – 6| , factor out –2
g(x) = |–2(x + 3)|

4. f ( x) = −3 + −4 x + 8

Transformations:
5. Write a function rule g(x) for the transformation of
reflected across the x-axis, horizontally stretched by 8, translated
right 5 and up 6 units.

6. a. Write a function rule for the absolute value graph.

b. What is the minimum value on the interval [-8, -3]?

7. Write a function rule for the absolute value graph.

8. a. Write a function rule for the absolute value graph.

b. What is the maximum value on the interval [-3, 0]?
