Root Word: “Sci” (meaning “to know”).
Historical Use: The word “science” has been used to describe knowledge about the natural
world since the 14th century.
1. Natural Science
Natural science studies the natural world and everything in it. It has two major categories:
i. Biological Science (Study of Life and Living Things)
• Biology – The study of living things (e.g., studying how plants grow).
• Zoology – The study of animals (e.g., learning about lions and birds).
• Botany – The study of plants (e.g., researching how trees produce oxygen).
• Microbiology – The study of microorganisms (e.g., studying bacteria and
viruses).
