Introduction

Introduction of Tata Curvv

The Tata Curvv is an all-new mid-size SUV from Tata Motors, marking a significant step forward in
the brand’s design and technology evolution. First showcased as a concept vehicle in April 2022, the
Curvv represents Tata’s bold vision for the future of personal mobility in both electric and internal
combustion engine (ICE) segments. The vehicle blends the practicality of an SUV with the elegance
of a coupe, introducing a distinctive design language that sets it apart in the highly competitive mid-
size SUV market.

History and Development

The Tata Curvv was first revealed to the public as an electric vehicle concept. Tata Motors, already a
leader in India’s electric vehicle (EV) space with models like the Nexon EV and Tigor EV, aimed to
expand its EV portfolio by introducing a futuristic SUV concept that catered to the next generation of
buyers. The Curvv concept was unveiled under Tata’s Generation 2 EV architecture, which promised
better range, efficiency, and a more refined design compared to its earlier EV offerings.

The concept vehicle drew widespread attention for its coupe-like sloping roofline—an unconventional
design choice for SUVs in the Indian market. Tata Motors designed the Curvv to appeal to young,
urban buyers looking for modern styling combined with advanced features and sustainability. Its
strong response at auto shows and events encouraged Tata to fast-track its production version.

Launch and Market Introduction

In 2024, Tata Motors officially launched the production version of the Tata Curvv, starting with its
ICE variants. The launch event marked Tata’s entry into a new segment that combined the stylish
appeal of a coupe SUV with practical mid-size dimensions suited for Indian roads. The Tata Curvv
ICE version comes with both petrol and diesel engine options, catering to customers who prefer
traditional fuel-powered vehicles while maintaining an eye on affordability and performance.

Following the ICE launch, Tata Motors plans to introduce the fully electric version of the Curvv,
expected later in 2024. This move will further strengthen Tata’s position in the Indian EV market and
offer consumers a choice between conventional and electric drivetrains within the same model lineup.

The Curvv’s launch is significant because it highlights Tata Motors’ evolving design philosophy—
referred to as “Digital”—which emphasizes clean, sharp lines, minimalism, and advanced
technologies. It also aligns with the company’s strategy to offer Level 2 ADAS features, improved
safety with six airbags, and futuristic infotainment systems in its latest vehicles.

Manufacturing Process

Manufacturing Process of Tata Curvv :

The Tata Curvv is a new-generation SUV-Coupé from Tata Motors, manufactured with advanced
engineering techniques, modern automation, and sustainable practices. Tata Motors has established a
reputation for building vehicles that combine innovation with affordability, and the Curvv represents
the company’s shift towards futuristic design and cleaner mobility. It is available in both electric
(EV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) variants, requiring dedicated manufacturing processes
to meet both technological standards.

The manufacturing of the Tata Curvv primarily takes place at Tata Motors' advanced facilities such
as Pune, Sanand, and Ranjangaon. These plants are equipped with Industry 4.0 technologies,
including IoT, robotics, and data analytics to ensure precision, efficiency, and sustainability.

1. Research & Development (R&D) and Product Design

The journey of the Tata Curvv starts with extensive R&D at Tata Motors’ design studios and
engineering facilities. The Curvv concept was first revealed in 2022 and showcased Tata’s futuristic
design philosophy called Digital Design Language, emphasizing sharp lines, aerodynamic
efficiency, and modern aesthetics.

 Engineers use computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools to
develop detailed vehicle designs.
 Prototyping and 3D modeling help in evaluating the aerodynamics, crashworthiness, and ergonomics
of the car.
 Simulations test different design components before physical prototypes are made.
 The Ziptron powertrain technology for the EV model is developed in-house, focusing on high
efficiency and long-range battery performance.

2. Raw Material Sourcing and Preparation

 High-strength steel, aluminum alloys, and lightweight composites are sourced from reputed
vendors.
 Tata Motors follows responsible sourcing to ensure eco-friendly and ethical procurement practices.
 Materials undergo strict quality checks for strength, durability, and compliance with safety standards.

3. Press Shop – Stamping and Forming

 The sheets of metal are stamped into shape using high-precision hydraulic and mechanical press
machines.
9
 Robotic arms handle large panels to create the body parts like doors, roofs, fenders, and hoods.
 Tata Motors employs laser cutting and hydroforming technologies for complex components to
reduce weight and improve strength.

4. Body Shop – Welding and Assembly

 Robotic welding machines and manual welding stations assemble the Body-in-White (BIW).
 Tata uses automated laser welding, MIG welding, and spot welding to join different panels.
 The assembly line includes inline measuring systems that ensure millimeter-level precision for body
alignment.
 Special attention is paid to crash zones and reinforcement structures for safety compliance.

5. Paint Shop – Corrosion Protection and Aesthetic Coating

 The BIW undergoes pretreatment, phosphating, and electro-coating (e-coat) for corrosion
resistance.
 Robotic arms spray multiple layers: primer, basecoat, and clear coat in dust-controlled paint
booths.
 Tata Motors uses environmentally friendly water-based paints, reducing volatile organic
compounds (VOC) emissions.
 The painted body is baked in ovens to cure the coating for a durable finish.

6. Powertrain and Chassis Assembly

 Engines for ICE models and Ziptron electric powertrains are assembled in separate, highly
controlled areas.
 EV batteries are assembled with strict protocols, including thermal management systems, battery
management systems (BMS), and waterproofing.
 The suspension systems, axles, and braking components are assembled onto the chassis.
 Heavy-duty automated guided vehicles (AGVs) transport components to various assembly points on
the line.

7. Trim, Chassis, and Final Assembly (TCF Line)

 The car's interiors, including seats, dashboards, infotainment systems, wiring, and airbags, are
fitted.
 Glass panels, doors, and electrical systems like ADAS sensors, LED lights, and digital instrument
clusters are installed.
 The powertrain, whether electric or petrol/diesel, is fitted along with the drivetrain components.
 Robots and technicians ensure components are torqued to precise specifications, reducing human error.

8. Quality Inspection and Testing

Every Tata Curvv undergoes comprehensive quality assurance checks:

 Rolling road testing simulates real-world driving conditions.

1
0
 Water leakage tests and dust ingress checks ensure the car’s sealing integrity.
 NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) tests confirm cabin comfort.
 ADAS systems and connected features are calibrated and verified.
 For EV variants, battery performance, thermal management, and charging systems are thoroughly
tested.

9. Final Inspection and Dispatch

 The cars undergo a final inspection for cosmetic defects, paint quality, and panel gaps.
 Tata Motors uses green logistics solutions like electric trucks and rail transport to deliver vehicles
to dealerships.
 Vehicles are shipped to domestic and international markets with comprehensive documentation and
compliance certifications.

Sustainability and Green Manufacturing Practices

 Tata Motors follows zero waste-to-landfill policies.

 Factories use solar power, rainwater harvesting, and energy-efficient systems.
