Science v Lesson 4 4th Quarter 2
The moon is a satellite of the Earth. It rotates on its own axis while revolving around the
Earth. It does not have light of its own. It gets its light from the sun.
The moon has eighth phases. It takes about one week for a moon to change from one
phase to another.
The moon goes through these eight phases in 29 ½ days. The period it takes the moon to
complete is called month.
New Moon - when the moon is between the sun and the Earth, you cannot see the moon it is
totally black.
Waxing Crescent Moon - as the Moon moves around the Earth, we get to see more and more of
the illuminated half, and we say the Moon is waxing.
First Quarter Moon - when half of the moon is lighted at the right side and occurs first week of
the month.
Waxing Gibbous Moon - The Moon appears to be more than one-half but not fully illuminated by
direct sunlight. The amount of the Moon that we can see will grow larger and larger every day.
* ("Waxing" means increasing, or growing larger.)
Full Moon - when part of the moon facing the Earth is all white, you can see the whole lighted
side of the moon.
Waning Gibbous Moon - The illuminated part of the Moon that we can see decreases, and we
say it's waning. The amount of the Moon that we can see will grow smaller and smaller every day.
*("Waning" means decreasing, or growing smaller.)
Last Quarter Moon - when half of the moon is lighted at the left side and occurs after a week of
the month.
Waning Crescent Moon- The Moon appears to be partly but less than one-half illuminated by
direct sunlight. The crescent will grow smaller and smaller every day, until the Moon looks like the
New Moon.
Beliefs and Practices Associated with the Moon
Have you heard of superstitions about the moon? Superstitions are beliefs based on opinions,
observations, and experiences but have no scientific explanation. Even in the modern age, some
people still believe in superstitions.
3. Tides
Gravitational forces exist between the moon and Earth to hold each other in their respective
positions. These gravitational forces affect Earth’s tides.
- Tides are the rising and falling of sea levels with respect to land.
- When one side of the Earth is close to the moon, this side of the Earth will be pulled towards the
moon, causing it to bulge.
- High tide is the rising of ocean level.
- Low tide the other side experiences low water level since the water is concentrated on the other
side.
Ex. Fishermen believe that the moon also affects the number of fishes they could catch.
