IV. METHODOLOGY
A. Site Preparation
1. Survey and Staked-out for elevation and construction limits.
2. After clearing and grubbing, use backhoe and/or jackhammer and air compressor to
remove existing headwalls and wingwalls. For extension of existing Underpass, chip
off existing concrete to expose rebars. Splice (40d) new rebars to match existing
rebars. All designated salvable materials shall be removed in sections or pieces which
may readily transported, and shall be stored at specified places as directed by the
Engineer.
3. Disposal should be done using a Backhoe for loading on dump trucks and transported
to the approved disposal area taking into consideration all the laws and regulations
concerning environmental protection.
B. Base Preparation
1. On cut section, unsuitable materials shall be excavated and removed by means of
backhoe. The materials shall be loaded to the dump truck and disposed at the
approved disposal area. On fill section, conduct quality test on existing ground to
confirm soil stability. If the existing ground failed the quality test, remove the
unsuitable materials up to the depth where the ground is stable and approved by the
Engineer. Then, replace the unsuitable materials with granular materials as instructed
by the Engineer. Afterwards, use embankment materials up to required elevation. The
base shall be compacted by means of hydrostatic roller or any equivalent equipment.
The compaction must be done thoroughly to attain the required degree of compaction
as stated in the contract drawings and specifications.
C. Lean Concrete
1. Lean Concrete of thickness 50mm shall be poured to level the surface wherein the
Underpass structure shall be placed. Concrete shall be poured by means of direct
pouring from the transit mixer. The concrete to be used shall be approved lean
concrete design mix.
D. Construction of Barrel
1. The reinforcing steel bars shall be laid out in accordance to the approved plans and
drawings. Dowels for the wing walls shall also be installed. In case of lap splicing, the
rebar shall be spliced in a staggered manner. The splice dowels shall be connected
by means of tie wires
2. Forms shall conform to the shape, lines and dimensions shown on the approved
drawings. It shall be properly tied and braced or shored so as to maintain the position,
line and grade. The shoring must be sufficient to resist the loads that will be applied
during the concrete pouring.

3. After rebar and formworks have been checked, concrete pouring shall immediately
take place. Concrete shall be poured directly using concrete chute. The chute
assembly shall be positioned and aligned in such a manner as to prevent segregation
of the concrete mix and displacement of reinforcements. The concrete shall be poured
continuously and properly vibrated using concrete vibrator. Care should be observed
during tampering and finishing of the concrete surface. Shear key shall be provided
whenever construction joints are required. Forms shall be removed after the concrete
has attained sufficient strength or as directed by the Supervising Engineer. Concreting
of the RCBC structures shall be done by sequence, to wit: Site execution
Upon completion of the base slab, the concreting of the RC wall shall be
done. Platforms with sufficient supports shall be provided to serve as access for
the workers. Once the RC walls have been completed, the concrete pouring of
the top slab shall take place. The top slab shall be poured in one time
E. Construction of Wingwall
1. Survey and lay out for wingwall.
2. Install rebar for wingwall. The reinforcing steel bars shall be laid out in accordance
to the approved plans and drawings. Dowels for the wing walls shall also be
installed. In case of lap splicing, the rebar shall be spliced in a staggered manner.
The splice dowels shall be connected by means of tie wires.
3. Forms shall conform to the shape, lines and dimensions shown on the approved
drawings. It shall be placed and both side joints should be properly tied and braced
or shored so as to maintain the position.
4. Concrete shall be poured by means of direct pouring from the transit mixer. The
concrete to be used shall be the approved concrete design mix.
F. Backfilling
1. All forms shall be dismantled and removed.
2. Backfilling shall be done by layer of twenty (20) cm. All layers shall be compacted
using plate compactor, and once read 0.6m above the top most of the underpass, a
3 tonner ride-on shall be used and the embankment must passed the required Field
Density Test (FDT). Passing of equipment is not allowed till embankment is not
completed.

All inspection and testing requirements shall conform to the submitted quality assurance plan
and the technical provisions in the contract.
1. Daily inspection of equipment’s before and after using of it ensure its good condition reliability.
2. Conduct inspection of the said area, to identify the safe access of the vehicle and heavy
equipment.
3. Assigned competent and well trained spotter for heavy equipment.
4. Equip the area with signage to remind of the activity and any safety application to be applied.
5. Toolbox Meeting before work execution should tackle the risk and danger that the activity has.
6. Ensure good working condition of all workers for the activity.
7. Gloves to protect hands are highly required for the workers, as per work trade and material to
be handled.
8. During night time, keep the site visible and strategically allocate tower lights.
9. Keep a Safety Personnel at the job activity to remind of the safety precautions.
10. Monitor workability of environment and weather, and advise any significant data.
11. Enclose excavated area to prevent any unauthorized personnel from entering.
12. Equip all personnel with proper Personal Protective Equipment prior to their task or activity.
13. Temporarily divert the pedestrians and vehicles passing the existing underpass.
