AND CHAMBER

Scope of work:

 The scope of works is to complete the installation of a new 1200mm ductile pipeline
between the by-pass line eastern plant on grit removal unit and the northern inlet channel
with building new chamber.
 The purpose of this method statement is to outline the processes required for excavation
and building chamber.
 This outline will then form the basis for the implementation of the works, including the
materials, equipment required to complete the mentioned task.

Excavation of Pipeline Route & chamber:

 Excavations be done by means of a 12ton excavator at a depth ranging from 2.5.0m to

5.0 m and an approx. width of 6.0m – 7.0m.

 Top soil in areas as instructed will be stored for rehabilitation purposes after works have
been completed. Where such requirements exist, 150mm of top soil will be stockpiled
along the trench route.

 Excavated materials will be stored next to the trench and where possible at least 1m
away from the edge of the excavations.

 Barricade netting will be installed alongside the trench as waring to persons during not
working hours.

 Daily excavation checklist must be conducted by appointed competent inspector and

safety representative on site before work commence.

 For excavations deeper than 1.5 meters the operator will be instructed to V-Shape the
rest of the excavation, to avoid trench to collapse and should it be noted that the soil
conditions are not of suitable materials and appear unsafe. In Deeper than 1.5
excavations hard hats must apply with standard PPE.

 Ladders will be placed in excavations every six meters for easy exit.

 If soil conditions are bad and cracks appear shoring must be done with proper timber
planks / shutter board and steel jacks, where it is found that V-Shaping or Stepping can’t
not be applied.

Backfilling

 Excavated materials are stockpiled next to trench. Stockpiled materials to be used for
backfilling will be sifted through 19mm sifts. Care shall be taken to remove all stones with
a nominal size bigger that 19mm including boulders and vegetation or any other
deleterious materials. Sifted materials will be used to backfill trench and compacted in
layers of 300mm. Topsoil will be spread Over backfilled area.

plain Concrete

 Bottom of the excavation should be dry and temped or compacted to a uniform level
before pouring the 100 mm thick lean concrete blinding layer.

Form work

 All formwork will be made by using plywood sheets, timber.

 Supports and scaffolding will be G I pipes, Arco props, sawn timber or round timber. All
surfaces of formwork will be finished smooth and mortar tight.

 The dimensions & position of formwork will be carefully checked after erection.

 Oil or grease will be used to avoid adhesion of mortar and to achieve a smooth surface.

 Before placing concrete all dirt, wood chips, hardened concrete or mortar and all other
foreign matter
 will be removed from the forms.

Reinforcing Rebar Works

 The reinforcing bars in conformity with the valid drawings shall be used in the
construction. Steel workers shall bend all rebar under supervision of the foremen.

 These foremen have to organize bending works according to the valid revision of related
project. After that steel fixers shall install all reinforcing steel.

 the embedded items shall be installed at the required level.

Pouring concrete

 Before placing concrete all formwork therein will be cleaned of all extraneous material
and dust and made free of any standing water.

 Concrete of specified grade will be placed & compacted layers not exceeding 300mm in
depth.

 Concrete will not be dropped from a height greater than 1.5m to prevent segregation.
Concrete will be free of all rock pockets, honey combs & voids.

Compacting / vibrating of concrete

 Mechanical vibrators will be used for compaction. For this stand by units will available in
the site during the period of compacting. All operators handling vibrators will be trained in
their operation properly.

Curing

 Continuous curing will be carried out in a moist atmosphere and Concrete area will be
kept covered with hessian clothes or Polyethylene sheets which will be kept moist
