Assertion and Reasoning Questions:

Directions: In the following questions, a statement of assertion (A) is followed by a

statement of reason (R). Mark the correct choice as:
(a) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true and reason (R) is the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(b) Both assertion (A) and reason (R) are true but reason (R) is not the correct
explanation of assertion (A).
(C) Assertion (A) is true but reason (R) is false.
(d) Assertion (A) is false but reason (R) is true.

1. Assertion: Rational number lying between 1/4 and 1/2 is 3/8.

Reason: Rational number lying between two rational numbers x and y is (x+y)/2
2. Assertion: 0.329 is a terminating decimal.
Reason: A decimal in which a digit or a set of digits is repeated periodically, is
called a repeating, or a recurring decimal.
3. Assertion: Rational number lying between two rational numbers x and y is
(x+y)/2.
Reason: There is one rational number lying between any two rational numbers.
4. Assertion: 5 is a rational number.
Reason: The square roots of all positive integers are irrationals.
5. Assertion: Sum of two irrational numbers 2 + √3 and 4 + √3 is irrational
number.
Reason: Sum of two irrational numbers is always an irrational number.
Case study Questions:

1. Mr Roy, a mathematics teacher explained some key points of chapter 1 of class

IX students. Some are given here.
There are infinite rational numbers between any two rational numbers.
Rationalisation of denominator.
A number is irrational, if its decimal form non -terminating, non- recurring.

On the basis of above key points, Answer the following.

1. Find the value of reciprocal of 2 + √3.
2. Write any one Rational number between √2 and √3
3. Evaluate: (3+√7) (3-√7)
2. During revision hours, two students vimal and Sunil were discussing with
each their topic of rationalising the denominator.
Vimal explains that simplification of 3/√5+√3. To rationalise the
denominator multiply numerator and denominator by √5 + √3.
Sunil explains the simplification of (√5+√3)(√5-√3) by the Identity
(a+b) (a+b) = a2 – b2.

Based on this information, answer the following questions.

1. What is the rationalizing factor of √5-√3

2. According to Vimal, simplify √3/√5+√3
3. According to Sunil, simplify, (√5+√3)(√5-√3)

3. In a school, one day Math teacher explained the students of class 9 about the
number systems. She drew a number line and explained to them the various
types of numbers on it. Rational numbers can be represented on the number
line. Any number is called a rational number if it can be written in the form of
p/q, where p and q are integers and q  0.

Based on above information, answer the following questions.

1. Find a rational number between 2 and 3 .

2. Find an irrational number between √3 and √5 .
3. Express 1. 3 in the form of p/q.
