020 Drainage Design

The document outlines the drainage design for a township with 189 households, calculating total wastewater and stormwater runoff for various areas. It details the design runoff for ten areas, the flow rates for different drains, and the dimensions required for the main drainage system using Manning's formula. The design aims to standardize drain dimensions to reduce costs while effectively managing wastewater and stormwater runoff.

Drain 2:
Area 5= 0.024 m3/s
Drain 3:
Area 7 + Area 10= 0.0125 m3/s

Design of Drain 2 (As this requires the largest Cross-Section):
Storm runoff, Q= 0.024 m3/s
Bottom width, B= 0.500m Let the Slope, S0 be 0.002 or 1 in 500
Manning’s Roughness coefficient, n= 0.016
Now, using Manning’s Formula,
Assuming yn (Depth of the Drain) as the normal depth at the given location,
Q=A*(1/n)*R2/3*S1/2
R- Hydraulic radius= A/P
A- Area of Cross-Section= B*yn = 0.5*yn
P- Wetted Perimeter= B+2yn = 0.5+2*yn
or, (Qn/S1/2) =A*(A/P)2/3
or, yn= 0.103 m

Design of Drain 5 (This Drain shall carry all the water out of the Township):
Area 9 rate of rainfall water flow required= 0.10 m3/s
Total Storm water runoff required for the rest of the township= 0.069 m3/s
Total Waste Water generated by the people in the Township per second= 0.001 m3/s
∴Total runoff required, Q= 0.010+0.069+0.001= 0.080 m3/s

Bottom width, B= 0.500m Let the Slope, S0 be 0.002 or 1 in 500

Manning’s Roughness coefficient, n= 0.016
Now, using Manning’s Formula,
Assuming yn (Depth of the Drain) as the normal depth at the given location,
Q=A*(1/n)*R2/3*S1/2
R- Hydraulic radius= A/P
A- Area of Cross-Section= B*yn = 0.5*yn
P- Wetted Perimeter= B+2yn = 0.5+2*yn
or, (Qn/S1/2) =A*(A/P)2/3
or, yn= 0.234 m
Thus, if we create a Drain of Dimension:
Breadth= 0.500m &
Length= 0.500m
All the drains can have the same dimensions and thus reducing the cost for designing
multiple section.
