Ee305l Endsem QP

The document is an examination paper for the EE 305L Power Systems course at the Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati. It contains four questions covering topics such as synchronous generators, transmission line capacitance, and ABCD parameters. Students are instructed to show all steps in their solutions and make relevant assumptions where necessary.

EE 305L POWER SYSTEMS

End Semester Examination
Time: 3 Hrs
Maximum Marks: 80

Instructions

1. This paper contains Four (4) questions.

2. Please write your name and roll number on the question paper. The question paper
has to be attached with the main answer booklet. Please DO NOT carry the question
paper with you.

3. Sharing or exchanging of calculators is not allowed.

4. Show all the steps involved in arriving at a solution clearly. Mere solutions, with no
clear steps may not be evaluated.

5. Make relevant assumptions, if required. Justify your assumptions.

1. (a) A 50 MVA, 30kV (line-line), three phase 60 Hz cylindrical rotor synchronous generator
has a synchronous reactance of 9Ω per phase and a negligible resistance. The generator is
delivering rated power at 0.8 power factor lagging at rated terminal voltage to an infinite
bus.
i. Find the excitation voltage per phase and the power angle.
ii. If the excitation voltage is reduced to 59.27% of the value found above, find the new
power angle, armature current and the power factor.
(b) A 15 MVA, 13.6 kV (line-line), 60 Hz hydro-generator operates at rated speed and rated
terminal voltage. Neglect the resistance of the stator windings. Assume that Xd = 9.864
Ω and Xq = 8.01Ω (per phase). The generator is now connected to an infinite bus having
voltage of 13.6 kV (line-to-line). The connecting link that connects the generator to the
infinite bus has a reactance of 1.356 Ω. The internal voltage of the generator is 16.59 kV
(line-to-line), and it delivers 10 MW power at the infinite bus. Find
i. The generator output current.
ii. Terminal voltage of the generator.
[10+10=20]

2. (a) Derive an expression for capacitance to neutral of a 3 phase transmission line, with unequal
conductor spacing and completely transposed.
(b) Consider a three phase, 50Hz, 50km transmission line with equilateral spacing. It is desired
that that the reactance of any phase does not exceed 31.4Ω. The conductor diameter is
2.57cm. Find the maximum permissible spacing between the phase conductors.

3. (a) A 180km, 230kV (line-line), 60Hz three phase transmission line has a positive series
impedance of 0.08 + j0.48Ω per km per phase and a shunt admittance of j3.3 × 10−6
S per km per phase. At full load the line delivers 250MW at 0.8 power factor leading and
at 220kV (line-line). Find the following
i. Sending end voltage.
ii. Sending end current.
iii. Full load efficiency.
iv. Voltage regulation.
(b) Find the ABCD matrix of the line assuming a long line model. (Hint: use series expansion
of hyperbolic functions and approximate it appropriately). Compare this matrix with the
ABCD matrix of medium line lumped approximation.

4. A 275kV tranmission line has following line constants:

A = 0.846 + j0.074
B = 51.763 + j193.185

(a) Determine the power at unity power factor that can be received at the receiving end if
the voltage at the sending end and the receiving end are maintained at 275kV (line-line).
(b) What would be the rating of shunt compensation that would be required if the load is
150MW at unity power factor. Assume that the voltage at the sending end and the
receiving end are maintained at 275kV (line-line).
(c) Determine the bus admittance matrix for the network shown in Fig.1. The line data is
given in Table 1.
