CVS 467.Chapter 1. Introduction

The course CVS 467: Building Physics & Services aims to equip students with fundamental knowledge of building services, including mechanical, electrical, and architectural contributions to construction projects. Students will learn about various systems such as water supply, fire protection, lighting, acoustics, and HVAC, and their relation to structural design. Assessment includes continuous tests and a final exam, with core references provided for further study.

CVS 467:Building Physics & Services

Purpose of the Course

 The purpose of this course is to provide the student with fundamental
knowledge of building physics and services.

Course Objective
At the end of the course the student should be able to:
 Describe the services provided by mechanical engineers, electrical
engineers and architects in construction projects;
 Relate the above services to the structural design of buildings.

20-Dec-24
Course Outline
1. Introduction to Building Services
2. Water supply: Hot and cold-water supply, sanitary services, rainwater drainage,
plumbing, pipes, fixtures, traps, venturing.
3. Fire danger and protection: Fire basics, design to protect, Firefighting equipment.
4. Lighting: Definition of terms, Design for economics of lighting.
5. Room/Building Acoustics: Sound transmission, building design in respect to acoustics,
economics of noise control.
6. Electrical Supply & Installations: Distribution and fittings, cables for information
technology, layout of electrical and telecommunication cables.

Introduction to Building Services
What is Building Services?
 Imagine yourself in the most fabulous building in the world. Now take away
the lighting, heating and ventilation, the lifts and escalators, acoustics,
plumbing, power supply and energy management systems, the security and
safety systems...and you are left with a cold, dark, uninhabitable shell.True?

 Everything inside a building which makes it safe and comfortable to be in

comes under the title of 'Building Services’.

 A building must do what it was designed to do - not just provide shelter but
also provide a safe, comfortable & livable environment.

 Building services contribute largely to the sustainability & functioning of the

building.

Introduction to Building Services..
Building services are “what makes a building come to life”. They
include:
 Energy supply - gas , electricity and renewable sources.
 Heating and air-conditioning
 Water, drainage and plumbing
 Natural and artificial lighting, and building facades
 Escalators and lifts
 Ventilation and refrigeration
 Communication lines, telephones and IT networks
 Security and alarm systems
 Fire detection and protection

Introduction to Building Services..
Classification of Building Services
Building services are mainly divided into:
1. Mechanical Systems
 HVAC Systems: Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
 Site drainage: water, drainage, sanitary disposal.
 Plumbing: water distribution, water treatment, sanitary facilities.
 Fire protection: water supply, standpipe, fire and smoke detection.

2. Electrical Systems
 Electrical power: normal, standby, emergency power supply and
distribution.
 Lighting: interior, exterior, emergency light.
 Auxiliary: telephone, data, audio and video sound.

3. Building Operation System:
 Transportation: elevators, escalators, moving walkways.
 Processing: product, food, services.
 Automation: environmental control and management.

 They are all very important part of planning, designing and construction of a
building.

 Building services systems are essential provisions for a building, accounting for
20% to 40% of the total construction cost.

 Figure next page shows the cost breakdown of a typical government office
building in the UK.

Main objectives of BSE design
1. Hygiene (prevent disease & ensure health)
2. Safety (protection against risks)
3. Comfort (physio- & psycho- well-being)
4. Convenience (efficiency & productivity)

Introduction to Building Services..
Importance of Building Services
 Building services are indispensable for buildings.

 As an example, certain types of building such as department store or

industrial buildings are almost 100% dependent on electrical lighting,
ventilating and air-conditioning while,

 High rise buildings rely on vertical transportation and high-speed pressure

for drinking and cleaning purposes and for protection against fire.

20-Dec-24
Introduction to Building Services..
Impact of Building Services on buildings
 Demand considerable amounts of floor and ceiling space – sufficient space
allocation is needed during the preliminary planning,
 This add to the cost of construction of a building – sophisticated buildings,
such as research buildings, hospitals, computer centres..
 Increase in energy consumption –energy consumed by occupied buildings,
including residential, commercial, institutional and industrial facilities,
account for 50% of all energy usage by an industrialized country; it also
accounts for large portion of the operating costs of such buildings.

The complexity of Building services varies with:

 Living standards of the society
 Climatic conditions of the region
 Occupancy and quality of the building.
