MACHAKOS UNIVERSITY

SCHOOL OF PURE AND APPLIED SCIENCES

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS, STATISTICS AND ACTUARIAL SCIENCES
SMA 433: PDE II TASK: ASSIGNMENT DATE: 10TH APRIL, 2025

INSTRUCTIONS
Attempt ALL questions in this paper
1. Reduce to canonical forms and obtain the general solution of the following equations
a. 2𝑢𝑥𝑥 + 3𝑢𝑥𝑦 + 𝑢𝑦𝑦 = 0
b. 𝑢𝑥𝑥 − 4𝑢𝑥𝑦 + 4𝑢𝑦𝑦 = 0
2. Using Monge’s method solve
a. (1 + 𝑞)2 𝑟 − 2(1 + 𝑝 + 𝑞 + 𝑝𝑞)𝑠 + (1 + 𝑝)2 𝑡 = 0
b. 𝑡 − 𝑟 sec 2 𝑦 = 2𝑞 tan 𝑦
3. Show that the cylindrical polar form of a Laplace’s equation in two dimensions is given by;
1 1
∇2 𝑢 = 𝑢𝑟𝑟 + 𝑢𝑟 + 2 𝑢𝜃𝜃 where 𝑢(𝑟, 𝜃), 𝑟(𝑥, 𝑦) and 𝜃(𝑥, 𝑦)
𝑟 𝑟
4. Fourier transform of a function 𝑓(𝑥) if it exists is defined by

1
𝐹̅ (𝜉) = ∫ 𝑓(𝑥)𝑒 −𝑖𝜉𝑥 𝑑𝑥
√2𝜋
−∞
Hence or otherwise find the Fourier transform of the function
2
𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑒 −𝑎𝑥 ; 𝑎 > 0
5. Using the method of separation of variables solve the one-dimensional wave
equation given below;
1
𝑃𝐷𝐸 𝑢𝑥𝑥 = 𝑢 ; 0 < 𝑥 < 2; 𝑡 > 0
16 𝑡𝑡
𝑢(0, 𝑡) = 0
𝐵𝐶𝑠 {
𝑢(2, 𝑡) = 0
𝑢(𝑥, 0) = 6 sin 𝜋𝑥 − 3 sin 4𝜋𝑥
𝐼𝐶𝑠 {
𝑢𝑡 (𝑥, 0) = 0
6. Solve the boundary value problems
a. 𝑢𝑥𝑥 = 2𝑥𝑦; 𝑢(0, 𝑦) = 𝑦 2 , 𝑢𝑥 (0, 𝑦) = 𝑦
b. 𝑢𝑥𝑥 = 𝑢𝑦𝑦 + 2𝑥; 𝑢(𝑥, 0) = 𝑥 2 , 𝑢𝑦 (𝑥, 0) = 𝑥
