Grammar Focus: Coordinating Conjunctions

In this lesson, you will learn how to use coordinating conjunctions. Coordinating
conjunctions are used to connect two or more ideas, making your sentences
more interesting and complete.

1. Types of Coordinating Conjunctions


The most common coordinating conjunctions are:
- and
- but
- or
- so

2. How to Use Them


- Use 'and' to connect similar ideas:
Example: She likes apples, and she likes bananas.

- Use 'but' to show contrast:


Example: He is tall, but he can't play basketball well.

- Use 'or' to show choices:


Example: Do you want juice, or do you want water?

- Use 'so' to show cause and effect:


Example: He was tired, so he went to bed early.

3. Practice Exercises
A. Circle the correct conjunction in each sentence:

1. I want to play tennis, (and / but) it's raining.


2. You can have an apple, (or / so) a banana.
3. She studied hard, (so / but) she passed the test.

B. Rewrite the sentences using the correct conjunction:

Liên từ đẳng lập (Coordinating Conjunctions)
Liên từ đẳng lập là những từ dùng để nối hai hoặc nhiều từ, cụm từ, hoặc mệnh
đề độc lập có chức năng ngang hàng trong câu.

1. Cách dùng
- and: dùng để nối hai hành động hoặc ý tưởng tương đồng.
Ví dụ: I like apples and oranges. (Tôi thích táo và cam.)

- but: dùng để thể hiện sự tương phản giữa hai ý.


Ví dụ: He is small but strong. (Cậu ấy nhỏ con nhưng khỏe mạnh.)

- or: dùng để đưa ra sự lựa chọn.


Ví dụ: Would you like tea or coffee? (Bạn muốn trà hay cà phê?)

- so: dùng để chỉ kết quả hoặc hậu quả.


Ví dụ: It was cold, so I wore a jacket. (Trời lạnh nên tôi mặc áo khoác.)
