Learners in a certain school want to determine the temperature of a liquid at certain
intervals but can’t do so accurately as the thermometer available to them has no
caliberations. The following lengths,measured by a liquid in glass thermometer,were
recorded in a table at different intervals as shown below.
Where the thermometer is placed in Length of the liquid column(cm)

At Roko construction site in Kawempe district casual labourers were required to
raise construction materials to the 3rd level which was 2400m from the ground, They
requested for a crane consisting of a pulley system of velocity ratio 7. The operator
raised a total load of 40,000N using an effort of 8000N.
Task :
As a learner of physics;
a) Draw a diagram to illustrate the pulley system contained in the crane. (2 marks)
b) Determine the efficiency of the pulley system. (3 marks)
3
c) During construction, the rope of the pulley system suddenly broke and the load
was observed falling downwards from the top of the building to the ground.
Determine the maximum velocity with which the load hits the ground. (3 marks)
d) Explain why the efficiency of machines is always less than 100% and state how it
can be improved. (3 marks)
ii) State any two applications of pulleys in our daily life. (2 marks)

Item 1
Mr.Kato the CEO of Pearl of africa hotel has a large piece of land on which he
wishes to construct an additional swimming pool besides the main building as to
improve on his accomodation facilities.
He constructed a swimming pool with dimensions 800 cm by 500 cm by 180
cm .After two months of using the swimming pool he realized that there were very
many waste materials in it such as polythene bags,stones,wood,clothes and pieces of
metal in the water. In an attempt to clean the pool he decided to use 20 litre
jerrycans to drain all the water from the simming pool.
Given 1?3=1000 l
Task As a physics student;
a) Determine how many jerrycans will be used to drain the swimming pool .
(04 marks)
b) Briefly explain why some materials were seen floating as others sunk in the pool
with relevant examples
(04 marks)
c) Explain any suitable safety precautions Mr.Kato must put in place during the
usage of the pool.
(02 marks)
Item 2
Jane and John are siblings living in a mountainous village. One day, their mother
asked them to go down to the river to fetch water for washing their dirty
blankets.They left home barefooted each with their own jerrycan.On their way, it
started to rain, making the ground slippery and hard to walk on. This caused them to
struggle to reach the river because they didn’t understand what was happening or
how to handle it. While collecting water Jane accidently dropped her jerry can and it
was swept away by the fast moving river, which was flowing north with a force of
120 N At the same time the wind blew the jerrycan eastwards with a force of
50N.Confused about how to stop the jerrycan, they couldn’t catch it, so they used
John’s jerrycan tpo collect the water instead. When they began washing the blankets
with just water, they noticed that the dirt was taking a long time to come out,they
wondered hoe to make the washing easier.

Task
Using your knowledge of Physics, Help Jane and John understand why;
a) They struggled to walk steadily on the wet ground and how can they
overcome this challenge.
b) How they can wash the dirt out of their blankets with ease.
c) Determine the resultant force they needed to apply to stop the
jerrycan from being carried away.
