s.1 Mid Term

The document outlines a mid-term exam for S.1 Physics students, including tasks related to a swimming pool's drainage, the behavior of pollen grains in a smoke cell, and the determination of a stone's density to identify if it is gold. Students are required to calculate the number of jerrycans needed to drain the pool, explain material buoyancy, and suggest safety precautions. Additionally, they must analyze physical phenomena observed in a smoke cell and apply density calculations to ascertain the nature of a suspected gold stone.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

MID-TERM TWO EXAMS 2024

S.1 PHYSICS
TIME ALLOWED 1:30 MINS
Instructions:Attempt all items

1) Mr.Kato the CEO of Pearl of africa hotel has a large piece of land on which he
wishes to construct an additional swimming pool besides the main building as to
improve on his accomodation facilities.
He constructed a swimming pool with dimensions 800 cm by 500 cm by 180
cm .After two months of using the swimming pool he realized that there were very
many waste materials in it such as polythene bags,stones,wood,clothes and pieces of
metal in the water. In an attempt to clean the pool he decided to use 20 litre
jerrycans to drain all the water from the simming pool.
Given 13 =1000 l
Task As a physics student;
a) Determine how many jerrycans will be used to drain the swimming pool .
(04 marks)
b) Briefly explain why some materials were seen floating as others sunk in the pool
with relevant examples (04 marks)
c) Explain any suitable safety precautions Mr.Kato must put in place during the
usage of the pool. (02 marks)

2) Pollen grains were introduced into a glass cell as shown in the figure below.An
observer viewing through the microscope was surprised about the change in the
behaviour of the pollen grains when he placed the smoke cell in a furnace.

Use your knowledge of physics to;

a. State the physical phenomena that the observer had seen. (01 mark)
b. Explian why there was a change in the behaviour of the smoke particles
(01 mark)
c. Explain what would happen if the glass cell was placed on ice blocks instead of a
furnace (03 marks)
3 During a geography lesson, learners picked a stone that they suspected to be
gold .They took it to the laboratory and determined its mass and volume to be 640g
and 33 3 respectively. The studets however did not know what else to do to
determine if it is Gold or not.
Hint: Density of Gold = 19400kg−
Use your knowledge of Physics to help the learners determine if the stone they had
picked was pure Gold. (05 marks)
