BSD1206 Networking essentials Assignment 1.

Due 23/10/23
Group One
1. Explain the concept of sub-netting and provide a step by step guide on how to
sub-net a given IP Address.
2. Describe the OSI model and explain the function of each layer. Provide an
example of a protocol for each layer.
Group Two
3. Compare and contrast TCP/IP and OSI models. Highlight their similarities and
differences
4. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of wired versus unwired networks.
Give specific scenarios where one might be preferred over the other.
Group Three

5. Define the terms bandwidth, Latency and throughput. Explain how they are
related and provide real world examples.

6. Explain the purpose of a firewall in network security. Provide examples of

different types of firewalls and their functionalities.

Group Four
7. Discuss the role of DNS(Domain Name System) in network communication.
Explain the process of DNS resolution and its importance.
8. Describe the purpose and functioning of ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) in
local networks. Provide an example scenario where ARP is crucial and the role of
ARP in mapping IP addresses to MAC addresses in a local network.
Group Five
9. Explain the concept of virtual LANS (VLAN) and how they help in network
segmentation and management. Provide a practical example.
10. Discuss the importance of error detection and correction in data transmission.
Explain how protocols like CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) work.
Group Six
11. Compare and contrast the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and the user
Datagram Protocol (UDP). Discuss their use and the advantages and
disadvantages of each.
12. Explain the concept of Quality of Service (QoS) in computer networks. Discuss
the different mechanisms used to prioritize network traffic and ensure reliable
delivery of data.
Group Seven
13. Describe the process of establishing a secure connection using the Secure Sockets
Layer (SSL) or Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols. Discuss the role of
public key cryptography in this process.
14. Discuss centralized and distributed network architecture, their advantages and
disadvantages. Provide examples of each and explain their impact on network
performance and scalability.
Group Eight
15. Transport protocols rely on different types of checksums to verify whether
segments have transmission errors. Discuss the frequently used checksums.

16. Discuss a transmission error that cannot be detected by the internet checksum
