Cylinder

Curved surface

The surface of a cylinder is made up of two circular faces and one

curved surface

Circular faces

Curved surface

Circular faces

The net of the cylinder is made up of two circle and a rectangle

The total surface area of a cylinder is the total area of the two circle
and the rectangle

Remember: area of circle = 2∏r2

Circumference of a circle = 2∏r

Diameter of a circle = 2r

Radius of a circle = r

Activity 1: produce a cylinder with cardboard paper

Formula for surface area of a cylinder

The surface area of a cylinder is the area of two circular face area of a
rectangle

Area of two circular faces: ∏r2 + ∏r2 = 2∏r2

Area of the rectangle: h

Area of curved surface: 2∏r2h

Total surface area of closed cylinder = 2∏rh + ∏r2

A cylindrical cup has a circular base of radius 7cm and height of 10cm.
taking the value of ∏ to be 22/7 calculate

a. Its curved surface area

b. The area of its circular base

Solution

a. Curved surface area = 2∏r2h

= 2 x 22/7 x 7x7x10/1
= 44x70 = 440cm2
b. Circular base = area of the circular ∏r2
= 22/7 x7x7
= 22x7 = 154cm2

e.g2 A cylinder of height 12cm and radius of 5cm is made of cardboard

using 3.1 for ∏

calculate the

a. Total surface area of closed cylinder

b. Total surface area of open cylinder
c. Total surface area of closed cylinder = 2∏r2 + 2∏rh
=2x3.1x5x5 + 2x3.1x5x12
=2x3.1x25 + 2x60x3.1
=50x3.1 + 120x3.1
=155 + 372 =527cm2

2. open cylinder = ∏r2 + 2∏rh

= 3.1x5x5 + 2x3.1x5x12

= 77.5 + 372cm2

= 449.5cm2

Class activity

Take the value of ∏ to be 3.1 calculate the curved surface area of

a. Radius 30cm height 36cm
Radius 60cm height 50cm

Diameter 5cm height 30cm

Diameter 10cm height 18cm

Volume of a cylinder

The volume of a cylinder =

Area of cylinder face x height of cylinder

∏r2 x h = ∏r2h

e.g 1: how many liters does a cylindrical can 14cm in diameter and
20cm height contain use 22/7 for ∏

Volume of cylinder = ∏r2h

= 22/7x7x720/1

= 22x20x7 = 3080cm3

Class activity

1. Use the value 22/7 for ∏

2. Calculate the volume of a cylindrical steel bar which is 8cm long
and 3.5cm in diameter
3. A cylinder storage vessel is 44cm in diameter and 3½m deep. how
many kiloliters will it hold

CONES

The surface of a cone is in two parts a circular face and a curved surface

The net of a cone is made up of a circle and a sector of a circle

Formula: for surface area of a cone.

Curved surface area of a cone =∏rh

Total surface of a cone = ∏r2

Examples

A Cone has a base radius of 5cm and a height of 12cm Calculate

[a] Its slant height

[b] Its total surface area

L L 12cm

5cm

L2 = 122 + 52
L2 = 144 + 25

L2 = 169

L = √169 = 13

Total surface area = ∏r∫ + ∏r2

= 22/7x5x13 + 22/7x5x5

Or 65∏ + 25∏

= 90∏cm2

Class activity

Use Pythagoras rule to find the slant height of a cone which has

a. A base radius of 4cm and height of 3cm

b. A base radius of 6cm and height of 8cm
c. A base diameter of 10cm and height of 12cm
d. A base diameter of 16cm and height of 15cm
Calculate the total surface area of solid cone of slant height 10cm
and base diameter 10cm use 3.14 as∏

Volume of cone

The volume of cone = ⅓ x base area x height

= ⅓∏r2h

e.g1 use the value 22/7 for ∏ to calculate the volume of cone of height
6cm and radius 7cm

volume of cone = ⅓∏r2h

= ⅓x22/7x7x7x6

=22x7x3 = 4622cm3

Class activities

Use the volume 22/7 for ∏ calculate the volume of cone of

a. Base diameter 14cm height 1.8cm

b. Base radius 14cm height 1.5m
c. Base diameter 10cm height 21cm
General questions
1. Use 3.1 as ∏
a. Calculate the curved surface area of cylinder of radius 6cm and
height 15cm
b. Calculate the total surface area
2. A cylinder wooden column is 3m high and 28cm is diameter
calculate
a. The volume of column
b. The mass kg if the wood is 0.8g/cm3
3. Use Pythagoras rule to find the slant height of a cone with base
diameter 16cm and height 17cm
4. Calculate the total surface area of cylinder whose radius is 2 and
height 10cm
5. Calculate area of the curved surface of a cylinder with radius 7cm
and height 10cm
6. Calculate the volume of cone measuring radius 7cm and height
4cm
