The document discusses the historical development of atomic models, starting with JJ Thomson's plum pudding model in 1898, followed by Rutherford's planetary model in 1911, and Bohr's model of the hydrogen atom in 1913. It describes Rutherford's alpha-particle scattering experiment, which involved a beam of alpha particles directed at a gold foil and detected through scintillations on a zinc sulphide screen. The experiment aimed to observe the scattering of alpha particles at various angles to support the planetary model of the atom.

ATOMS ‘The first model of atom was proposed by JJ Thomson in 1898 called plum pudding model of the atom. Later, Rutherford worked on it and named this model as Rutherford’s planctary model of atom in 1911. In 1913, Niels Bohr worked on the model named as Bohr model of H-atom. O-PARTICLES SCATTERING EXPERIMENT BY RUTHERFORD ‘This experiment was suggested by Rutherford in 1911 as given in the figure below Experimental arrangement for Rutherford’s theory In this experiment, H Geiger and E Marsden took ”{3Bi as a source for (t-particles. A collimated beam of tt-particles of energy 5.5 MeV was allowed to fall on 2.11077 m thick gold foil. The c1-particles were observed through a rotatable detector consisting of a zinc sulphide screen and microscope and it was found that o-particles got scattered. These scattered o-particles produced scintillations on the zinc sulphide screen. Now, these scintillations were counted at different angles from the direction of incident beam.
