The Watch

SCENE: A supermarket. Andrew is walking slowly from counter to counter. Finally, he

stops at one, looking carefully at a display case on top of the counter.

1 SALESPERSON: May I help you?

ANDREW: Maybe. I saved money to buy that silver watch. (He points to
the display case.) But when I looked at it last month, it cost R60.
SALESPERSON: R70? T h e price went up last week.
5 ANDREW: I only have R60.
SALESPERSON: Well, I could show you some watches for less money.
ANDREW: Thank you. l guess I'll have to come back some other time.

(Meanwhile, Eddie, a classmate of Andrew has been listening to

the conversation and he starts talking to Andrew).

10 EDDIE: Listen, you're wasting a lot of good money just to buy that
watch. Why don’t you just rip it off?
ANDREW: Rip if off? Steal it?
EDDIE: Rip, steal …a word's a word. You just go over there and
take it, that's all.
15 EDDIE: Look! (He pulls a pencil out of his pocket). I picked this off about a
half an hour ago from the stationery counter.
ANDREW: No. I won’t do it.

QUESTION 3: SUMMARY (5 MARKS)

• Read the text below.
• Summarise 4 main signs of a bad friend in 40 – 50 words.
• Write in full sentences.

Signs of a Bad Friend

A bad friend will follow a pattern of bad behaviour. Here are some signs to watch out for.

If you do not trust your friend, it may be time to part ways. Another sign of a bad friend is a
growing feeling of unease or dislike toward them.

It can be difficult to recognize abusive behaviour in people you love or trust. Any form of
physical, mental or emotional abuse is a good reason for ending the friendship.

Abuse may not always seem obvious. If you’re feeling mistreated by your friend, it can damage
your self-esteem.

If your friend calls you names to hurt your feelings, is rude or mean to you, you are
experiencing a bad friendship.

One of the clearest signs of a bad friend is when your friend encourages criminal or dangerous
behaviour.
