DC Generator-Part 2 Note

The document outlines different types of DC generators, including separately excited, series wound, and shunt wound generators. It explains the configurations and characteristics of each type, including their voltage equations and current relationships. Key parameters such as armature current, terminal voltage, and resistances are also defined for each generator type.

DC GENERATOR

Part 2 - Note
Types of Generator
Types of generator

Separately excited Self excited

Series Compound
Shunt wound
wound wound

Long shunt Short shunt

Separately Excited
● Field magnets are energized by some external DC source

Eg = V+IaRa+ 2Vb

Eg = Generated voltage at armature

V = Terminal voltage
Ia = Armature current
Ra = Armature resistance Pgenerated = EgIa
Vb = brush drop Poutput = VIL
Series Wound Generator
● Field coil connected series with armature winding
● Winding consist of thick wire of a few turns
● Normally resistance less than one ohm.

Eg = V+Ia (Ra+ Rse) + 2Vb

Eg = Generated voltage at armature
V = Terminal voltage
Ia = Armature current
Ise = Series field current
Ia = Ise=IL
Ra = Armature resistance
Rse = Series field resistance
Vb = brush drop
Shunt Wound Generator
● Field winding connected across the armature
● Full voltage applied across it
● Winding consist of thin wire of a many turns
● Resistance of the order of 100 ohm.

Eg = V+IaRa+ 2Vb
Eg = Generated voltage at armature
V = Terminal voltage
Ia = Armature current
Ish = Shunt field current
IL = Load current
Ia=IL+ Ish
Ra = Armature resistance
Rsh = Shunt field resistance
Pgenerated = EgIa
Vb = brush drop Poutput = VIL
