DC Motor Part 4 Note

The document discusses the speed regulation and characteristics of DC motors, including torque and speed relationships under various load conditions. It outlines different drive types such as constant speed, constant power, and adjustable speed drives, along with their applications. It emphasizes the importance of load on armature current and speed, particularly for DC series motors, and warns against starting them under no load conditions.

DC MOTOR

Part 4 Note
Speed Regulation
● The change on speed when the load on the motor is reduced from rated value
to zero.

Regulation = x100
Basic relation for explaining characteristics
Φ
● Eb = x

● Eb ∝ ΦN
E
● N ∝ Φb

● Ta = 0.159 ΦZIax( )

● Ta ΦIa
Characteristics of dc motor
● Torque vs Armature Current (T vs Ia)
Electrical Characteristics
● Speed vs Armature Current (N vs Ia)
● Speed vs Torque (N vs T ) Mechanical Characteristics
Based on speed-torque(N-T) characteristics
● Constant speed drive
● Constant power drive
● Adjustable speed drive
Constant speed drive
● When the torque increases , speed remains constant

Speed
Application
● Lathe machine
● Centrifugal pumps
● Hydraulic pumps
● Line shafting
● Fan type load
Torque
Constant power drive
● P=
● P NT
● N

Speed
● For getting constant power , when
torque increases ,speed will decrease
Application
● Cranes
● Hoists
● Locomotive
Torque
● Elevators
● Crushers
● Constant torque, variable power
● Constant power , variable torque
Adjustable speed drive ● P NT
● for constant torque when speed
increases , power will increase
Power, Torque

T ● for constant power when speed

increases , torque will decrease
P

P
Application
T ● Steel mills
● Rolling mills
Constant torque Constant power Speed
● Balling mills
Variable power Variable torque ● Punching mills
● compressors
Characteristics of dc series motor
● Torque vs Armature Current (T vs Ia)
(Electrical Characteristics)

● Ta ΦIa
● Φ If
● If = Ia
● Ta Ia x Ia
● Ta Ia
Characteristics of dc series motor
Speed vs Armature Current (N vs Ia)

Eb
● N
Φ
● Φ If
● If = Ia
● Eb =V- IaRa
● If Ia increases , Eb will decrease
V− IaRa
● N
Ia
● So when armature current increases(Ia)
, speed(N) will decrease
Characteristics of dc series motor
Speed vs Torque (N vs T )
(Mechanical Characteristics)
Eb
● N
Φ
● Φ If
● If = Ia
● Ta Ia
● We can change Ia with 𝑇
E
● So, N ∝ b
● Eb =V- IaRa , Eb is consider as constant ,
change in armature current IaRa is negligible
because Ra value is very small

N∝
𝑻
Conclusion
● When the load of DC SERIES motor is zero or low ,Armature current will be
low so speed will be high or infinite for zero load or no load
● Never start dc series motor in no load condition
● Torque is proportional to square of armature current, so dc series motor will
produce large starting torque with less power effort at starting

Application
Hoists
Electric trains
Cranes
