1. An air conditioned room with dimensions 3 m wide, 3 m height and 6 m depth. One of the
two 3 m walls faces west and contains a double glazed glass window of size 1.5 m by 1.5 m,
mounted flush with the wall with no external shading. There are no solar heat gains through
the walls other than the one facing west. Calculate the sensible, latent and total heat gains on
the room, room sensible heat factor from the following information.
Inside conditions : 25oC dry bulb, 50 percent RH
Outside conditions : 43oC dry bulb, 24oC wet bulb
U-value for wall : 1.78 W/m2.K
U-value for roof : 1.316 W/m2.K
U-value for floor : 1.2 W/m2.K
U-value for glass ; 3.12 W/m2.K
Solar Heat Gain (SHG) of glass ; 300 W/m2
Internal Shading Coefficient (SC) of glass: 0.86
Occupancy : 4 (90 W sensible heat/person) and (40 W latent heat/person)
Lighting load : 33 W/m2 of floor area
Appliance load : 600 W (Sensible) + 300 W(latent)
Infiltration : 0.5 Air Changes per Hour
What is the required cooling capacity?
2. A classroom is 6 m long, 6 m wide and 3 m high. There is a 2.5 m x 4 m window in the east
wall. Only the east wall/window is exterior. Determine the cooling load for the following
conditions: Overall window heat transmission coefficient = 7.0 W/m2K.
Room dry-bulb temperature = 25.5°C
Schedule of occupancy: 20
Exterior wall structure: • U = 0.643 W/m2 K
Exterior window: • Single glazing, 3 mm• No exterior shading, SC = 1.0
3. Calculate the cooling capacity for the given class room illustrated in the figure. Indoor
conditions are (24°C DBT and 50%) and outdoor conditions (35°C DBT and 26°C WBT).
Total number of persons is 60 persons. The room height is 3m. The neighbor rooms, upper
and lower room’s at the outdoor conditions. The thermal conductivity for external wall,
neighbor walls, floor and ceiling are 2.5, 2.6, 0.72 and 0.73 W/m.deg, respectively which
have a same thickness of 0.25m. Overall heat transfer coefficient for windows and doors are
1.8W/m2.deg. Tack the absorptivity of external walls 0.6.

Calculate the cooling load for the given office illustrated in Fig. 1. Indoor conditions are (24°C
DBT and 50%) and outdoor conditions (35°C DBT and 26°C WBT). Total number of persons is
20 persons. The office height is 3m. The office neighbor rooms, upper and lower room’s
temperatures are 30°C. Overall heat transfer coefficient for external wall, neighbor walls, floor
and ceiling are 1.6, 2.5, 1.5 and 1.7W/m2.deg respectively. Overall heat transfer coefficient for
windows and doors are 3.2 and 1.8W/m2.deg respectively. Sun temperature difference is 10K.
