Computer Systems Notes

1. Introduction
A computer system is a combination of hardware and software components that work
together to perform data processing tasks. It receives input, processes it, stores the data,
and produces output.

2. Components of a Computer System

Computer systems have four major components:

1. 1. Hardware
2. 2. Software
3. 3. Users (Peopleware)
4. 4. Data

3. Hardware
Physical parts of a computer, such as CPU, monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer, etc.

4. Software
Software is a set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do.

 Types of software:

 System Software – e.g. Operating Systems (Windows, Linux).

 Application Software – e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Browsers.
 Utility Software – e.g. Antivirus, File Management tools.

5. Users (Peopleware)
The people who use the computer system – such as students, teachers, engineers, etc.

6. Data
Raw facts and figures entered into the computer system which will be processed into
information.

7. Functions of a Computer System

The computer performs the following basic functions:
5. 1. Input – receiving data.
6. 2. Processing – performing operations on the data.
7. 3. Storage – saving data and instructions.
8. 4. Output – presenting the results.
9. 5. Control – directing the way data is processed.

8. Types of Computer Systems

Computer systems can be classified based on size, purpose, or functionality:

10. 1. Microcomputers (e.g. Desktop PCs, Laptops)

11. 2. Minicomputers
12. 3. Mainframe Computers
13. 4. Supercomputers
14. 5. Embedded Systems (e.g. in cars, washing machines)

9. Characteristics of Computer Systems

15. 1. Speed – performs tasks quickly.
16. 2. Accuracy – performs tasks without errors.
17. 3. Automation – operates automatically.
18. 4. Versatility – can perform many tasks.
19. 5. Storage – can store large amounts of data.

10. Summary Table

Component Description

Hardware Physical parts of the computer.

Software Programs and operating systems.

Users People who use the computer.

Data Raw facts and figures.

Input Receiving data into the computer.

Processing Working on the data.

Output Presenting the results.

Storage Saving data and programs.
