D&E. Discussing New
Concepts and Strategy: Powering Our World!
Practicing New Skills
Directions:

Part A

1. The activity is divided into two parts.

2. You are going to explore station by station to observe how electricity is

generated, transmitted and distributed

3. Take note of each stage, from production to consumption, and how energy
flows efficiently through the system.

4. For each station, you have 2 minutes to observe and answer the guide
questions.

Guide Questions:

Part A.

1. What is the original form of energy in this power plant's energy source?

Geothermal power plant:

Wind power plant:
Hydropower plant:
Solar power:

2. After electricity is generated, how is it transferred to powerlines?

3. How do step-up and step-down transformers improve efficiency in power

transmission?

Directions:

Part B.

1. Each group is assigned to different types of power plants.

2. Answer the guide questions for 5 minutes

3. Choose one representative from the group to present your work

Guide Questions:
Part B.
1. Describe how the initial form of energy is converted into thermal, mechanical,
and electrical energy in different types of power plants.
GROUP 1: Geothermal power plant:
GROUP 2: Wind Power plant:
GROUP 3: Hydropower Plant:
GROUP 4: Solar power plant:

2. Fill out the flowchart showing the process of electricity from the different types
of power plants to the consumer.
`

Answer:
1.
Geothermal power plant: Thermal Energy
Wind power plant: kinetic Energy
Hydrothermal power plant: Potential Energy
Solar power plant: Light/solar energy
2. After electricity is generated in the power plant, it is transmitted through
high-voltage power lines using transmission towers. Transformers help step
up the voltage for long-distance transmission and step it down for safe
distribution to homes and businesses.
3. Step-up transformers increase the voltage and decrease the current to
reduce energy loss during long-distance transmission. Step-down
transformers then lower the voltage for safe use in homes, schools, and
businesses.

Part B
 Geothermal power plant:

Energy Transformation
Geothermal Power Plant
1
Heat from underground steam or hot water carries thermal
energy.
2
The steam or hot water turns the turbines, converting thermal
energy into mechanical energy.
3
The spinning turbine powers a generator, transforming
mechanical energy into electrical energy.
`

Wind Power Plant

Energy Transformation
Wind Power Plant
1
Wind moves the turbine blades, converting wind energy into
kinetic energy.
2
The spinning blades turn a rotor connected to a shaft,
converting kinetic energy into mechanical energy. The
spinning shaft powers a generator, maintaining mechanical
energy.
3
The generator converts mechanical energy into electrical
energy, which is then transmitted for use.

 Hydro power plant

Energy Transformation
Hydro Power Plant
1
Water is stored in a dam at a high elevation, holding
gravitational potential energy.
2
Water flows down through pipes (penstock), converting
potential energy into kinetic energy.
3
The moving water pushes and spins the turbine, converting
kinetic energy into mechanical energy.

4 The spinning turbine powers a generator, which converts

mechanical energy into electrical energy.

 Solar power plant

Energy Transformation
Solar Power Plant

1 Sunlight reaches the solar panels (light energy)

2 The solar panels (photovoltaic cells) convert sunlight into

electricity (Electrical Energy).

The electricity is either used immediately, for homes and

3 businesses, or stored in batteries for later use. (Electrical
Energy)

J. Additional Activities for Strategy: What I Can Do?

Application or Remediation Direction: With the knowledge of how the electrical energy is generated, transmitted,
and distributed to the consumers, do the following task. Suppose you hear that your
mother inherited a vast area of land and with many waterfalls which can be a great
source of hydroelectric energy. A private investor had negotiated already with your
mother about the possibility of constructing a hydroelectric power plant. Your mother
wants to know more about this power plant. Your task is to make an illustration, model,
or representation of how the hydroelectric power plant works to allow your mother to
understand the whole process. You may use ¼ illustration cardboard, indigenous and
recyclable materials in creating your illustration. Refer to the criteria in designing your
model.
