CLASS – X SAMPLE PAPER

MATHEMATICS
General Instructions:
1. This Question Paper contains 4 sections A, B, C and D.
2. Section A comprises 6 questions of 1 mark each.
3. Section B comprises 3 questions of 2 marks each. An internal choice is provided
in section B.
4. Section C comprises 3 questions of 3 marks each. An internal choice is provided
in section C.
5. Section D comprises 1 question based on Case Studies. It contains 3 sub-parts of
the values of 1, 1 and 2 marks each respectively. Sub-part of value 2 contains 1
internal choice.
6. This question paper consists of three printed pages.
SECTION - A (6x1=6)

Q.1 If HCF of 55 and 99 is expressible in the form 55 m – 99, then the value of m is
(a) 4 (b) 2 (c) 1 (d) 3

Q.2 The maximum number of zeroes that a polynomial of degree 4 can have is
(a) one (b) two (c) three (d) four

Q.3 If α, β are the zeroes of the polynomial x² – 16, then αβ (α + β) is

(a) 0 (b) 4 (c) -4 (d) 16

Q.4 The least number that is divisible by all the numbers from 1 to 10 (both inclusive) is
(a) 10 (b) 100 (c) 504 (d) 2520

Q.5 If one of the zeroes of the quadratic polynomial (k – 1)x2 + kx + 1 is -3, then the value
of k is
4 4 2 2
(a) (b) − (c) (d) −
3 3 3 3

Directions (Q. No. 6): In the following question, a statement of Assertion (A) is followed by
a statement of a Reason (R), choose the correct choice as:
(a) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both Assertion (A) and Reason (R) are true but R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) Assertion (A) is true but Reason (R) is false.
(d) Assertion (A) is false but Reason (R) is true.
Q.6 Assertion: The value of k for which the system of linear equations kx – y = 2 and

6x - 2y = 3 has a unique solution is 3.

Reason: The graph of linear equations a 1x +b1y + c1 = 0 and a2x + b2y + c2 = 0 gives a pair
of intersecting lines if a1/a2 ≠ b1/b2.

SECTION - B (3x2=6)

Q.7 On a morning walk, three persons step off together and their steps measure 40 cm,
42 cm and 45 cm, respectively. What is the minimum distance each should walk so
that each can cover the same distance in complete steps?

Q.8 For what values of p and q will the following pair of linear equations has infinitely
many solutions?
4x + 5y = 2;
(2p + 7q)x + (p + 8q)y = 2q - p + 1

Q.9 If one of the zeroes of the quadratic polynomial f(x) = 4x 2 – 8kx – 9 is equal in
magnitude but opposite in sign of the other, find the value of k.

OR

Q.9 If one zero of the polynomial 3x 2 – 8x + 2k + 1 is seven times the other, find the value
of k.

SECTION - C (3x3=9)

Q.10 Given a linear equation 3x - 5y = 11. Form another linear equation in these variables
such that the geometric representation of the pair so formed is:
(i) intersecting lines
(ii) coincident lines
(iii) parallel lines
OR
Q.10 Solve for x and y:
6(ax + by) = 3a + 2b
6(bx – ay) = 3b -2a

Q.11 Solve the following system of linear equations graphically:

3x + y – 12 = 0;
x – 3y + 6 = 0
Shade the region bounded by the lines and y-axis. Also, find the area of the shaded
region.

Q.12 Obtain the zeroes of the quadratic polynomial 6x2 – 3 – 7x and verify the relationship
between its zeroes and coefficients.

SECTION - D (1x4=4)
Q.13 CASE STUDY:
A shopkeeper has 420 science stream books and 130 arts stream books. He wants
to stack them in such a way that each stack has the same number and they take up
the least area of the surface.

Based on the above information answer the following questions:
(a) What is the maximum number of books that can be placed in each stack for this
purpose? (1)
(b) Which mathematical concept is used to solve the problem? (1)
(c) If the shopkeeper doubles the quantity, then find the maximum number of books that
can be placed in each stack. (2)
OR
Find the LCM of the given book streams. (2)
