MATH PROJECT WORK

Topic: The Story of π (Pi)

Name: Abhilash

Class: [Your Class]

Roll Number: [Your Roll Number]

Subject: Mathematics
Abstract
The number π (pi) is one of the most fascinating and significant constants in the world of
mathematics. Representing the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, π has
intrigued mathematicians, scientists, and engineers for over four millennia. What makes π
so special is its infinite, non-repeating decimal expansion, and its relevance across diverse
fields of study—geometry, trigonometry, calculus, physics, computer science, and even art
and music.

This project aims to take you on a journey through the history, development, and
applications of π. We’ll explore how ancient civilizations approximated π, how it evolved
through centuries of mathematical exploration, and how modern technology now uses π in
astonishing ways. Real-life observations, formula applications, and a deeper understanding
of irrational numbers will also be included.

Introduction
Pi (π) is a mathematical constant that defines the ratio of a circle's circumference to its
diameter. It is approximately equal to 3.14159 but is an irrational number, meaning it
cannot be expressed as a simple fraction, and its decimal representation goes on forever
without repeating.

π is found not only in geometry but also in physics, computer algorithms, statistics, and
even in complex equations such as Euler’s identity:
e^(iπ) + 1 = 0
This equation connects five of the most important constants in math.
Aim
The objective of this project is to:
- Understand the origin and historical significance of π.
- Explore how π is used in mathematics and other disciplines.
- Perform real-life observations to prove the value of π.
- Solve problems using π to demonstrate its practical applications.
- Appreciate the mystery, beauty, and importance of π in modern life.

Research Work / Observation

I measured the circumference and diameter of various circular objects to verify the π ratio.

| Object | Diameter (cm) | Circumference (cm) | C/D Ratio |

|--------|----------------|--------------------|------------|
| Coin | 2.4 | 7.5 | 3.125 |
| Plate | 20 | 62.8 | 3.14 |
| Bangle | 6.5 | 20.4 | 3.14 |

Problems and Solutions Using π

Q1: Find the area of a circle with radius 10 cm.
A: Area = πr² = 3.1416 × 100 = 314.16 cm²

Q2: A wheel makes 200 rotations. Radius = 35 cm. Find distance covered.
A: Circumference = 2πr = 2 × 3.1416 × 35 = 219.91 cm
Distance = 200 × 219.91 = 43982 cm = 439.82 m

Conclusion
π’s journey from ancient geometry to modern computing is a symbol of human curiosity
and discovery. Its infinite nature reminds us that there’s always more to explore in
mathematics and the universe.
